Ok, this a useless post but I hope you'll find it funny.
Some time ago, on some website, I read the word "dodging", which I didn't know (I'm not a native English speaker). So I left my computer and opened my... Hindi dictionary. And I looked for the word : द ... दो ... दोज. That's only when I saw there was no entry beginning with दोज that I realized I was searching the wrong dictionary, not even using the right script! Wink

French. And before Hindi, I never tried to learn a language that doesn't use Latin alphabet.

Also, the 'o' in 'dodging' isn't pronounced like that found in दोज.
But I found your story amusing all the same.  Smiley

I have a story about the ओ sound.  I've always wondered why North Indians pronounce Kochi/Cochin with a long 'o' instead of a short o as is proper.  It's only after I learned Hindi that I realized that Hindi only has the ओ sound, while in Malayalam there is:

കൊച്ചി where കൊ is the short 'o' sound represented by the vowel .

The Hindi ओ actually would correspond to കോച്ചി where കോ is the long 'o' sound represented by  .

Wow, this Baraha Direct thing is incredibly easy to use.  It allows me to transition from Malayalam to Hindi to English very easily.

I've just bought a Teach Yourself Hindi course.  And I'm way too shy too ask any one of our Indian contractors at work for help in trying my obviously rubbish first attempts (they are mainly from Chennai and I know that's in Tamil Nadu, so they might look at me and say "you think my mother looks likes a lampshade?" when i try to say "Aur apke nam?" and with a Scottish accent, I know that I'm going to sound rubbish).

I'll try though.  If you ever meet a tall scotsman with an appalling pronunciation (and hair that looks like it wants to be somewhere else) that'll be me.  If I ever get my act together enough to take the plunge and do it.

I can't wait to start mangling more language.  Smile at me when I do.

There's a big chance they don't know a word of Hindi anyways if they're Tamil (more specifically if they are second generation Tamil). So maybe you're not even missing out by not asking. It would still be fun to ask one day though Smiley

I do that all the time when I can't think of the word in French!

And I know I'm probably using the words wrong, but I'm the only Bollywood fan in class, so...

Also, mom calls Mikey her "didi" (or something similar, you know baby talk, oh my bibi, has Kaitlyn been mean? She made you sleep all day poor didi) and I keep telling her to stop since that's a word for sister!

(Another language note - we called Ginger something like "Deeter" and my cousins' German uncle... his name is Dieter. Whoops.)

You know you are obsessed with Hindi when you're writing something in Portuguese and you accidentally write य instead of Y. Tongue

...and when you start pronouncing non-Hindi words the way they'd be pronounced in Hindi.

...and when you automatically start talking about the Hindi language when you don't know what to talk about.

...and when your English schoolbook has more things written in Hindi than in English.

.....when at the Oklahoma Museum of Art's Passages Exhibit, I put my name in the computer and it spit out a page with my name written by "phonetic substitution" in various Ancient, Modern and Fantasy languages.  In Devnagri, it spelled my name, Vinitha. I was so thrilled.

Also included were my name in Greek, Hebrew, etc. in Ancient Languages and Klingon, etc. in Fantasy languages.

And I got to read the "phonetic substitution" Devnagri for all ten members of our group. They were awestruck that I could read that stuff.  All had American English names, so it was quite mangled at times.  But we all had a good laugh.

(As a side note, my few Hebrew classes also came in handy, as did the basic Greek.)

You are watching movies and stop the film when there are signs or words in Hindi so you can figure out what they say. A bit of a side note,  I was watching RNBDJ two days ago for the.....okay I refuse to admit how many times I have watched this. But back to my story I could actually read the sign on the back of the truck in the scene when they are on the motorcycle! Yippee. I jumped up and did the happy dance in the middle of the living room!

On the back of the truck it say:

Hum hain raahi pyar ke
Phir milenge chalte chalte

We are travelers on the path of love
Well meet again as time goes by

When you're watching Telemundo with your family (as non-Spanish speakers) and start musing on how much Spanish we actually know, and mom says "I know siesta is to take a nap" and you correct her: "No, to be exact it's siesta lena."  Grin

Hah this thread is fun! I find myself spelling out everything in Devnagari in my head. Ditto to answering 'haan' to yes or no questions - theres something quite intuitive about it, people get that I mean yes and proceed rather than going 'what?'

I'm taking French and also get confused. We were doing an exercise joining clauses with 'qui' or 'que' and I kept putting ki!

I've taken to saying 'uff' and 'hai hai'. I've also got a good line of Hindi swears, which I won't repeat here, but which came courtesy of YouTube so you can probably guess what they are. Tongue
