He was a lead actor in the 50s-70s, I think he starred across Meena Kumari a lot but can't be sure (like in Pakeezah).  He was famous for his dialogue delivery, and you can see some of that in Waqt.

He was called "Jaani" as he was famous for using that word in his dialogs/conversations to refer to people.
A good film he was in is Sharara, with Hema Malini.
He was also in Saudagar (1991), Subhash Ghai's movie with Dilip Kumar and Manisha Koirala.

Mumtaz is another BW actor with Iranian origins.

I always sympathize for her every time I hear name for undergoing such bad luck as far as her eye is concerned: one of her previous male co-stars was to slap her on the cheek as per script requirement, and he hit her so hard that she flinched back and her eye has been like that ever since. She claimed that it was due to that incident where directors started offering her less and less roles as a heroine.

In the early fifties, Life magazine did a feature on Indian actresses. The photos of Madhubala from that shoot have already been posted on Bollywhat somewhere, but you can see the entire collection at google images:

http://images.google.com/images?q=movie+queens+source:life&hl=en&biw=1366&bih=677&gbv=2&tbm=isch&ei=mks0TtPROsShsQLGx43mCg&sa=N&start=0&ndsp=18

All the photos are fantastic (and the ones of Madhubala are the most beautiful I've even seen of her, imo). I also like the pictures of Begum Para (she's the one smoking in the last picture on the second row). She was a vamp in the forties and fifties. She had a sort of raffish quality to her.

For the LIFE full sized photos of Madhubala, Begum Para, Mohana Cabral, Nalini Jaywant:

The photos of the audition process are a bit disturbing to me!

On top of this Movie section, that whole website is AMAZING... love vintage photography!
