Been meaning to catch some of those films, like In Custody, Shakespearewallah, and the Helen documentary. Thanks for the heads up.
Last night I watched a Merchant-Ivory film that isn't on that lineup called
Slaves of New York
, which I thought was a huge bore. Its about a bunch of Bohemian artists living in NY in the late 1980s. While I don't demand that characters be likeable, I do demand that they be interesting and do or say interesting things. This movie felt like a bad student film.

It was based on a bad, over-hyped book. Don't get me started on the premise that being boho, in and of itself, makes one interesting.

Perhaps that's why TCM gave it a pass (or they're saving it for a future Underground slot). Looking it up on Wikipedia, it sounds like critics at the time agreed with Prem Rogue.

Oh, this sounds great! Thanks for sharing, filmifan. I've seen
The Householder
already, but I've been meaning to watch
Shakespeare Wallah
for some time.

Me too!
I had just noticed the line-up for Sept. 1st and came here to post about it. The schedule for Sept 29th looks great too.

I found Bollywood through TCM - a BW festival about a decade ago. All it took was 3/4 of Junglee (I missed the beginning) and I was hooked!
RIP Shammi, I have a lot to thank you for...

Same here! Except DDLJ happened to be the first of the lineup that I watched. And IIRC, Ismail Merchant was the cohost for it.

I watched DDLJ, DCH, Rangeela and Mother India during that lineup. It would be great if they re-aired some of Merchant's introductions as part of this series.

I watched Junglee, Bombay and Rangeela on that festival. And immediately after went to rent DCH...and...that was all she wrote.
