Did a scan on an 82yr old gentleman, when I asked him if he was done for the day, he said he'd have to check with his wife, "she'd been keeping him straight 56 years". After I remarked about the 56 years, and said, "yeah, you better check with the Chief of Staff", he said "yeah, I better....... She's a pretty good kid". Don't know why that touched my heart, but hearing him refer to his spouse that way...... but it made me smile, and the utter sincerity he said it with was a positive thing for my day.

My hot water heater died Friday night and flooded the basement.  When I called a plumber the next day they said it would cost $800 for a new one - which might as well be $8000, because I don't have it.  And they don't do financing.  I spent the weekend boiling water in the kettle for washing and figured I'd have to make do like that for another month or so until I could save up the money and find someone on Craig's List who could do it for less.  Then yesterday I was at a friend's house for a picnic and I told her about my hot water heater.  Then her boyfriend offered to install a new one for me - today!! I was stunned.  He's a self-employed independent contractor, so he does this kind of thing for a living.  I explained that I had no money, and wouldn't have anything for a few weeks at least, but he insisted he could put it in today and I could pay him in installments!  I am so grateful, you can't imagine.  Happys endings!! This one isn't about a person, but so sweet I had to write it. We are having (passing now) yet another storm. These are bad, lightning, the house shaking with thunder. I went outside to look. My beautiful 7 year old Malamute, Spirit, came out, braved the noise to herd me back into the house and downstairs, where it is safe!

The cinnamon bread I could eat at Whole Foods was on sale for $7. The sticky buns now have HFCS. I was bummed. While my sister and I watched a movie my husband made us the best cinnamon rolls from scratch I have ever tasted.

The "little thing" that made me happy today was winning an HTC Sensation, which makes the "nice people", HTC, for putting one up for grabs.  Grin

Tomorrow I need to make some cinnamon rolls and take them to the neighbors. They have been a serious pain ever since they had the twins 16 years ago.  Tongue  She was 48 when they were born and she hasn't been happy, screaming at them constantly and he is 10 years older than her and just plain weird. Barks at me and my dogs. We call him barky boy and the kids the Children of the Corn as they just stand there and stare or tease my dogs.

I said some harsh things to her one day about her yelling at the kids, letting them tease dogs etc. She wouldn't look at me for a year, but all the bizarre behavior stopped, at least in public.

Found out she finally went for therapy, discovered the kids have Asperger's and they are all getting help. The kids actually said hello for the first time ever this summer and they know my husband is disabled and I work and they started mowing our lawn! They do it when we are not home!

I am so grateful I could cry. Husband will do it when I am gone and then he is sick for two days as he cannot deal with heat.

When I was in India, there were a few little girls living in the shelter I used to volunteer at. Most of them were very inquisitive and affectionate and easy to talk to, but there was this one girl who was extremely shy and usually kept to herself. She wore a pair of intricate gold anklets, and I went up to her and complimented them and started asking her about them to break the ice. We got to know each other pretty well after that, and I'd often play board games with her, or bring her ice cream or a little treat like that.

The day I went to the shelter one last time to say goodbye to everybody, she took off her anklets and gave them to me, because she remembered me asking her about them the first day and she thought I had wanted them. Of course, I couldn't accept them, but I was just so incredibly touched that this 6 year old girl who had so little in terms of material wealth would want to give me her most prized possession. I have so many stories like this from the time I spent at that shelter.

This totally made my day today: one of my students, who's incidentally desi (koi connection hai), came over to me yesterday after our teaching session with questions etc. I was nice to him, naturally: we usually are nice to medical students, they see our other faces after they start working in hospitals  Wink

So today he passes by our department, finds me and starts talking, asking questions etc.  and then randomly he tells me "You're very nice. It's so easy to talk to you"

Whoa. Nobody has said that to me since, what, high school. It was very sweet, especially coming from a student, and since the hospital is such a tense place to work, it was really heart-warming to believe I haven't lost the human touch at work  Smiley Smiley

^ It's a small thing but it's so nice when people do that, esp when you're in a rush

Currently I am helping out with an ailing pet and the French vet we go to is one of the nicest, smartest people I've ever met, she is communicative, optimistic and extremely competent. Quite reassuring to see her each time

Sanyogita - your story choked me up.

A woman in my neighborhood adopted a stray dog who had both eyes removed due to a viral infection when she was a puppy. The dog was unfortunately on her way to a shelter of no return in Arizona, and this wonderful lady heard about it through some online emergency-rescue connection, and flew cross-country(at her own expense) to adopt her.
This lovely little blind dog is one of the neighborhood favorites - and her owner says that she very rarely bumps into things in the apartment. Even outside she behaves very freely. She's as friendly and adorable as can be. People like this restore my faith in humanity. Actually many stories in this thread do that. I need a booster like this after all the stuff that's been going on in the world.. Smiley
