Suraiya in Rustom Shorab.  Enchanting, mysterious veiled woman playing the harp and singing beautifully = I so want to see this movie.

Indeed.

From Andaz (1949) - hum aaj kahin dil kho batey.  A young Mukesh singing for Naushad.  Back then he emulated KL Sehgal.

That song was on a Hindi mix tape my dad made and listened to a lot when I was kid, along with this beautiful song from Naina Barse from Woh Kaun Thi?

This is a beautiful song, jo unki tamana hai.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdJ1h2bvyd0

Can anyone help with lyrics translation?

o unki tamannaa hai, barabaad ho jaa
tu ai dil muhabbat ki qismat banaa de
tadap aur tadap kar abhi jaan de de
yoon marate hain mar jaane vaale, dikhaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barabaad ho jaa ...

naa unkaa tabassum, tere vaaste hai
naa tere liye unki zulfon ke saaye
tu be-aas phir kyon jiye jaa rahaa hai
javaani mein ye zindagaani lutaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barabaad ho jaa ...

sitam yaa karam husn vaalon ki marzi
yahi soch kar koi shikavaa naa karanaa
sitamagar salaamat rahe husn teraa
yahi us ko mitane se pahale duaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barabaad ho jaa .

The soldiers are remembering their loved ones back home.  They are imagining how hard their separation must have been for their beloved when, in fact, they are projecting their own feelings of loneliness.

You can substitute any soldier of any nation for these guys and the sentiments would still hold true.

"Chhod Do Aanchal" from Paying Guest, composed by none other than the genius S.D. Burman and sung by Kishore and Asha.

It's so romantic and sweet, innocent and melodious, as compared to the stuff of nowadays. (Girls baring their flesh! Icky!) And hurray for Dev and Nutan's chemistry! So sweet and realistic too! I especially love the part where he tries to hug her but ends up hugging the post instead. <3

I was sorry to hear of his passing.  He left a mark even though he live in an era of many, many great composers.

I note from his biography that he was not formally trained - just like his contemporary & my favorite OP Nayyar.

"Milti hai zindagi mein Mohabat" from Aankhen (Ravi):
