For some reason, I'm in a bhajan mood today morning. Didn't find any threads on here and thought it'd be good to have a nice list for when such moods strike.

I like bhajans with a decent tempo, not the really slow soporific ones. Some favorite ones I'm listening to:

Aisi Laagi Lagan Meera ho gayi magan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBKNpxH-z5w

Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye (Translation: Good ppl are those who feel the pain of others..). Gandhiji's favorite bhajan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLbqn7hmOo0

Sukhakarta dukhaharta (Translation: O Bringer of Joy, Remover of Sorrow - this is the standard Ganpati aarti we sing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN1C4XODKWY

Hum Ko Man Ki Shakti Dena (Give us the strength of mind)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EhHm-DVOgM

Jayostute Jayostute (Victory to Thee, O Goddess of Freedom) - more a patriotic-devotional song but is also sung like a bhajan. (ETA: sorry that the video has political interjections in the middle and end, but i didn't find another video that had translations like this one does - read or ignore the politics as you see fit)

Nice thread, thanks for the links guys. I always listen to bhajans on several morning/evening aartis and also on Monday mornings before vrut begins. I wish they had more proper mundirs in Los Angeles with scheduled aartis and everything. I will try and post some links to Shiv Ji/Lord Krishn bhajans and muntras in the next coming weeks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBKNpxH-z5w

I really enjoyed that bhajan, Someone, thanks for mentioning it. It's sung by Anuradha Paudwal who has a very beautiful voice and who has sung many bhajans, many available on youtube, and for anyone who's interested, you can peruse a lot of her stuff to find other nice songs.

Looking forward to those links, LA. Wink Smiley I'm surprised such a big city doesn't have some/many nice mandirs, though. Do Hindus in the States generally settle in another part of the country? I think there's a lot in the Northeastern states just based on people who come here for pilgrimage and people who go there on pilgrimage to various mandirs.

Most of the bhajans from the film Meera starring Hema Malini are quite nice, but this one is by far my favourite because it's so sweet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rsj9yTmKWAQ&feature=related

From the movie Banaras starring Urmila Matondkar there's this bhajan which I also like (starts about 30 seconds in): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9LfSgDOZp4

Edited to add:
I just remembered this one, which is very famous: madhuban mein radhika nache re. It's from the movie Kohinoor.

I am not religious but do enjoy devotional songs.  I can imagine writing, composing and singing devotional songs must be very different than most other music.

"Saancha Naam Tera" from Julie is one that I have been listening to a lot recently.  Love it when the Mangeshkar sisters sing in close harmony.  Usha and Asha feature in this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq_MtcEteC8

"Tu pyar ka sagar hai" is another favorite from the film Seema (1955):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QM8ohMGneY

"Man Tarpat" from Baiju Bawra is the grand pappy of all bhajans.  What is unique about this song is that it was written by Shakeel Badaiuni, composed by Naushad and sung Rafi and all three of them were muslims:

Here are some more I thought of:

Yashomati maiyya se from Satyam Shivam Sundaram

Aana hai to aa raah mein from Naya Daur

Main to giridhar ke ghar jaoon
from Jogan

Jago mohan pyare jago from Jagte Raho

Jo tum todo piya from Meera (also from Silsila)

Tumre bhavan mein
from Delhi 6

All bhajans are devotional songs but not all devotional songs are bhajans.  Some are prayers seeking the strength to do what is virtuous.  I guess that is why these songs find appeal across religions.  Seema was one example.  Here are a couple more.

"Aai maalik tere baande hum" from Shantaram's classic Do Aankhen Baara Haath:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmYFRNXrPdk

"Hum ko mann ki shakti dena" from Guddi:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbchuCfqBls Angry

Added:

Here is unique bhajan that is both an anti-war hymn and cuts across religious lines as well.  "Allah tero naam" from Hum Dono:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJMFzAcNZNc

Nicely said! In that vein:

Man re tu kahe na dheer dhare from Chitralekha

Aartis can be whole sub-section of the bhajan thread.

This aarti is from Manoj Kumar's Purab aur Paschim.  Experiencing an aarti in a crowded temple is always such a moving experience:

Here is a lovely bhajan (Govind Bolo Hari Gopal Bolo) from the crime caper Johny Mera Naam.  Bad Guy Pran threatening Eye Candy Hema Malini and you've really got yourself something to pray for:

In light of Shivaratri recently concluding, the song 'aai mahashiva ratri', from the movie Mahashiva Ratri comes to mind. I wonder if anyone knows anything about this movie?

Along with these two I remember us students used to sing Itni Shakti Humein Dena Daata (Ankush) during school assemblies.

To add to the list:
Jaise Suraj Ki Garmi Se (Chhaya)

Na mein dhan chaahon, na ratan chahoon...
Geeta Dutt and Sudha Malhotra sang this bhajan composed by SD Burman for Vijay Anand's Kala Bazaar.  Shailendra wrote the lyrics:

I like this Bhajan and I personally identify this bhajan with Shiva because of its simplicity in worship (as oppose to extensive pseudo-religous rituals)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XDiWm9opF0

That's a nice rendition of that very well-known bhajan by Ravi Shankar and collaborators. In fact, I like that entire album, actually, even the Vedic chanting.

Since it came out recently, the song from Agneepath, Deva Shree Ganesha comes to mind as a filmi bhajan. Warning: lots of drums and rather noisy. Smiley

I quite like this one, it's Jai Radha Madhav by Jagjit Singh:

There's another lovely version of it as well, which I've heard
It has a slightly different rhythm, I will come back and post a link for that once I find it Smiley

An exceptional bhajan that was also used as a declaration of unfulfilled love.  From the classic Pyaasa - featuriing the top notch cast of Waheeda, Guru Dutt (also director), Sahir (lyrics) and SB Burman (music).
