alright, here is the thread!
my father in law will be in town this weekend, which i either didn't know for sure or was blocking out (
)
so...my schedule is free on the weekends, pretty much, for a movie, i will need to get my babysitter since mister zombeaner is NOT going to miss out on this!
so, here are links to theaters showing new york...
well, one link, since everest in irving doesn't have any weekend showtimes for new york...but funasia in richardson does...
http://www.funasia.net/
ok, so zombeaner and i can make a friday or saturday evening or a sunday afternoon...
there is a strip mall just on the other side of the highway from funasia that has some sari places, and a large grocery store and a couple of restaurants. we could easily eat or shop or both, before the film. or after, if we went to a matinee.
let's discuss!

Any of those times would work for me, too, except this weekend, Sunday is not good. But you were talking about a later weekend in July, right?
I am planning to see a movie this weekend, but if the group will be going to see New York next weekend (July 10 - 12), I will go to the Akshay - Kareena movie this weekend.

I am going to be in East Texas, about 2 hours drive from Dallas this week. However, I will have my boys with me and from all that I have read, New York is not really a kid's movie. Is there anything playing at FunAsia that my sons, ages 8 and 5 can watch? If not, then I will have to pass on this weekend, as I have to be at my SIL's for the fourth of July.
The weekend of the 11th I have my writer's group. This is something I don't want to miss. If it had been an SRK movie, maybe. So, the next weekend is also out.
However, I might be able to make it to Dallas the following two weekends. I would need about three days notice to make arrangements for a baby sitter.

Their schedule for this weekend isn't up, yet, but Thursday evening at 7:30, they have "Paying Guests" and "Kal Kisne Dekha", which are probably not very good - but would be more likely to be suitable for children. Here is the FunAsia website:
http://www.funasia.net/
Friday's schedule should be posted soon. Normal Fridays only have 7:30 pm shows, but this Friday may be different and have matinees, since it is a holiday for many people (including me). "Kambakkth Ishq" is supposed to open on Friday and it should be suitable for kids. Except that there might be kissing.
Word of warning about FunAsia: Sometimes they are overly air conditioned. Wear closed-toed shoes and carry a warm sweater just in case you need it. I have come close to freezing to death in there at times and I grew up in northern Michigan where it snows nine months out of the year. The last couple of times I have been there it has been warm enough, but you never know from one time to the next.

okay, so zombeaner got his annual birthday gift from me, which is a VIP pass for the asian film festival, so he is busy the weekend of the 17th, so it looks like we are deciding on either the weekend of the 24th or the 31st...is that working for all? let's narrow it down!

Martha, Are you going to see 'Kambakkth Ishq' this Friday for sure? If so, I can meet up with you. Which theater will you be going to? Do you know of any shops or restaurants nearby? I read the reviews for Paying Guests and Kal Kisne Dekha and I think the kids would enjoy both. Kambakkth Ishq might also be fun, they really are into reenacting action sequences from SRK movies. A favourite is the Matrix style backwards flip when Satish Shah spits at SRK in the teacher's lounge in MHN. So I think they might enjoy Kambakkth Ishq.
re: restaurants. I went to one called 'Our Place Indian Restaurant'. The food was good and the decor was interesting. They had HW movie posters all over the place.

Vinita, Yes, lets meet up to watch Kambakkth Ishq. The movie times have not been posted on the website, yet, but it looks like they have started working on it. Afternoon would be better for me, so hopefully they will have a Friday afternoon showtime. Early evening would also work, but late evening is difficult since I usually get up early in the morning. I always go to FunAsia in Richardson. Irving is too long of a drive.
I don't know a lot of restaurants, but I have been to the buffet lunch at Subzi Mandi (a big grocery store at Spring Valley and Plano Rd) and it is good. Also, I have been to a restaurant at Beltline and 75 - SW corner - that is good, but I can't remember the name of it. The only sari shop I know is in that same shopping area.
Will you have computer access at your sister in law's house? We may not know show times until tomorrow.

We didn't meet up because Kambakkth Ishq sounded too dreadful from everyone's reports, but we are still up for a meet-up later in the month.
I ended up seeing New York last Friday because I was afraid it would go away before the meetup ever happened. It's really excellent. I'm not sure yet if I want to see it a second time, but I will definitely want to meet the group for dinner and shopping. Alternatively, we could go to see Love Aaj Kal or Luck, if either of those sound promising.
Is anyone interested in going to the Sonu Nigam concert on July 25? This will be at the Garland Events Center.

Have any of you been to an Indian concert before? I haven't and I was thinking of going to this one just for the experience.
I will have my kids with me, boys 8 and 5, as I haven't been able to find any one to take them for two whole days. So, I won't be able to see NY or KI. Maybe they will have something more appropriate for kids by then.
Also, I plan on being there for two days, June 24 and 25. I reconnected with a white friend through DDLJ ( in the scene where Raj and Simran are saying goodbye and she says I don't have your address and he says he won't come to the wedding, there is blond girl in the back ground who looks a lot like my friend looked when I knew her before and I Googled her and she has her own website and videos on YouTube) and will be spending the night with her. I have invited her to our shopping/dinner/ movie thing. She was really into singing Hindi songs and has made career of singing for weddings, birthday parties, etc. I hope it was OK to invite her as she so kindly invited me to stay the night at her place.
Also, she knows all the Indian/Pakistani shops in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and would be a great resource for all of us unaware/unknowing of such things.

I haven't been to an Indian concert before. I wanted to go see Sonu Nigam the last time he was here, but I was out of town that weekend. I do want to go to the concert on July 25, but I don't want to go by myself.
That's great that you invited your friend to the dinner/shopping movie thing! The more the merrier! I'm thinking about inviting a friend who I sometimes go to movies with - as soon as we have more specifics about when and what.

I am going to be in East Texas, about 2 hours drive from Dallas this week.
Update: Didn't get to go when I had planned but went to East Texas last Saturday, July 11. I was able to pick up AM 700 which is called Saalam Namaste and is owned by Everest, about 30 miles from the OK/TX border on Indian Nation Turnpike. It stayed with me through all the driving I had to do in East Texas. It is mostly a talk show format with some songs mixed in. One of the guys spoke such true Hindi/Urdu, I had a hard time understanding it. I also picked up FM 104.9 by FunAsia for a few minutes around Paris and Mt. Pleasant. This was a mostly movie music format with some simple questions. I caught one show which was a tribute to Prakash Mehra, the guy who made Amitabh famous as the Angry Young Man. She would play songs and ask questions about the music writer, the lyric writer, etc.
So decided to drive back via I30 and TX380 to Denton and then I35 to OKC. AM 700 stayed with me until about McKinney. FM 104.9 stayed until about 70 miles into OK.
You guys in TX! I am so jealous. You have these two radio stations to listen to. I am stuck with CD's and DVD's. Must ask Husband to get SIRIUS satellite radio, Maybe then I can listen to them in the car also. Have been listening to Fun Asia on the internet at home.
Note to MODS: Not sure where to post this. Please feel free to move it to the appropriate thread.

"Luck", starring Sanjay Dutt, is supposed to open next weekend. Maybe that one will be decent. I want to see it if it sounds promising. I like Sanjay.

I went by the local Indian grocery store yesterday and they have KI, NY and ShortCut on pirated DVD's for sale. I guess I can just watch them at home.
Have we decided on a date? Friday or Saturday? And at what time? Please let me know. I won't be able to go to the movies, unless they have something that my kids can watch but I would like to meet as many of you as possible, so I will come for the shopping and the food parts.

I am sorry I cannot make it on the 31st. My husband is back on the 30th and when he is home, I don't plan anything that he doesn't like. My husband is not into Hindi movies. So, it is the 24th or the 25th of this month.
If not, then the first weekend I will be available in August will be the 28th-29th.

I am in Dallas with my friend.
She wants to do a shoot and needs a little girl and boy. I have volunteered my son but we need a little girl. The shoot would consist of the little boy giving a rose to the little girl and then the girl would run and hide behind a tree trunk and peek from behind it to see if the boy is still there.
Please PM me if you are interested in letting your daughter do something like this. We might do the shoot tomorrow, if we can get a little girl.
