I've highlighted an interesting paragraph in this recent news report - according to Farhan, Don 2 is being written by himself and two fans.

By Subhash K. Jha, June 10, 2009 - 17:23 IST

Not to quibble - but over one year ago doesn't really seem all that recent. Smiley

You are right - its still 2009 and not 2010 in my mind.   Smiley.  My apologies.  I found it interesting that he was writing the story with a couple die hard Don fans as opposed to using his father.  Its quite unusual and I'd be curious to see the result.

No problem. Cheesy

Just a guess, but... I have a feeling Farhan didn't mean he just drafted two random Don fans off the street. I think he means he's working with two of his staff writers who happen to be Don fans. And he's including himself among the team of 3 fans who are writing.

These are yours truly and two new enthusiastic boys Ameet and Amreesh who came to me with their ideas on how the story can be carried forward.

Farhan's quote about "two new enthusiastic boys who came to me with their ideas" sounds like it could be just ardent fans with ideas and not professional writers.  The IMDB site for Don 2 (2011) credits just Farhan for the story and mentions no other names.  We will find out, as the release approaches, if Farhan actually got some of his ideas from these two guys and wrote a story around it.  I'd be curious.

Great news for SRK fans in Berlin: He's there, and they are shooting "Don 2" until the end of November there (which is, by the way, one of the darkest months with the worst weather you can get in Germany - beats me why on earth anyone would want to shoot there now instead of in Summer, when it's really beautiful).

Possibly they want dark, murky weather for Don's dark, murky doings?

Looking forward to this film and also thrilled that Kunal Kapoor is in it. Not only for the double-yummy factor, but also because he's a great actor. I hope this film gives him the same type of career boost that the prior one gave to (the much less talented) Arjun.

Here's a video of that jump.  Its a 300' jump or 30 standard height floors.  That's pretty gutsy.  I tend to take "I like to do my own stunts" type assertions with a grain of salt but this guy actually does what he says.

You guys didn't understand the German commentary, I assume. Although SRK stood on that edge, it wasn't him who finally jumped, it was a stuntman.

He seems to have done some kind of jump if you go by his tweets:

Had done the base jump from this building...eh the tall one on the left...now feeling scared. http://twitpic.com/2xb47p

my jump was last shot of day. want to thank my duplicate & action team, to do it before me for wide shots & make me feel confident about it
10:27 PM Oct 12th via web

Just did a over 300 feet base jump for Don...cos u all make me believe i can fly. Time to tell kids about the birds and the bees...ha ha

Agreed. Like Kunal alot. I think the Arjun comment is a bit harsh though. Arjun does have a good screen presence.

SRK can't pull of menacing to me.   He doesn't pull off superhero look either in Ra 1.  He comes off as cartoonish to me in both looks.

Looks like somebody isn't learning from the EPIC FAIL that was Kites: The Remix

Apparently there are plans to put together an international version of Farhan Akhtar's ferocious and flamboyant flick so that SRK can come face to face with Tom Cruise's " Mission Impossible 4".  Roll Eyes (Me: So basically they're making an Indian film, taking out it's Indian soul/ USP and hoping it will compete with a globally established action film franchise starring Tom Cruise. OK. )

And to prove how global in execution "Don 2" is, here's the thing. A car chase sequence featuring Shah Rukh shot in Berlin last month was so steep and dangerous it damaged one of the expensive cameras that had been requisitioned to capture the heart-in-the-mouth stunt. Luckily no one was hurt. (Me: WTF? Stunts going wrong prove a film is global?)

"While in the first part, Don wanted to take over the crime syndicate in India, in 'Don 2' the Don wants to capture the entire European market. Shah Rukh's character is no longer an Indian crimelord wanted in 11 countries. He is portrayed as a European gangster, replete with all the trappings of an international kingpin," said a source.

The magnitude of the character's power and the external trappings of his prosperity have been captured in "Don 2" by deploying a budget that leaves behind all other Indian films on international crime.

To play the European kingpin, Farhan and Shah Rukh apparently studied the lives and lifestyles of various international crimelords.

"It was one thing for Shah Rukh to portray the Indian don wanted in 11 countries. In 'Don 2', his character wants to rule Europe. Shah Rukh's clothes, cars, girls, gadgets and perfume had to convey a global aura," said a source. (Me: Lets just include 'Shah Rukh's girls' while talking about trivial, material objects, shall we? But considering that 'Shahrukh's girls' are both winners of prestigious international beauty pageants, they have this sorted.)

"Don 2" is said to be assembled on an international scale. And there would probably be a full-scale international version of the film for an NRI global market with the songs eliminated and the drama reduced.  Angry (Me: If this is the only version that comes to London, I will be a very, very unhappy girl and totally go watch MI 4 instead.)

If you control the crime syndicate in India, how is the next logical step Europe? Shouldn't it be Asia?

^ At this point, more Americans would rather see SRK than Tom Cruise in a film  Smiley

I still don't get Bollywood's approach to marketing to the West. It seems to boil down to, "Make exactly the kind of film that Hollywood already makes, just with Indian actors, and cut the songs out." If I was an American audience member who wasn't into Indian films, why would this approach get me to watch an Indian film? Wouldn't I just watch the Hollywood versions of the same thing if they don't really offer anything different? Why should I watch an essentially Hollywood-style movie that's merely in a different language with subtitles?

This approach reeks of insecurity. Rather than making the films they want to and presenting them to the world as-is, they're trying to make the kinds of films that Western audiences already have access to. What's the point of that? It kind of reminds me of when I would have non-Indian friends over to my house when I was younger and my mom would always offer them pizza and mac-and-cheese, even though my friends loved the Indian food she made. For whatever reason she thought they wouldn't like it.

Ofcourse how stupid of me, the 'global perfume' that the audience cannot smell is clearly the key to world domination.  Cheesy Beware Europe, SRK is coming soon to a cinema near you and he's smelling international. Take that Hollywood!
