Shah Rukh to do daring stunts in Don 2
Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service
Mumbai, June 15, 2009

His shoulder surgery and Indian Premier League matches put him out of the silver screen action for a while. Now Shah Rukh Khan is all set to do daring stunts in the sequel to Don - The Chase Begins Again, though there will be no double role.

Director Farhan Akhtar will shoot Don 2 with the original star cast from May 2010 in Ireland and Berlin and says Shah Rukh will do some of the most heart-in-the-mouth stunts, making it his most audacious actioner yet.

"He's always game for the audacious. But the health problems really frustrate him," said Farhan referring to the superstar's shoulder surgery this year.

Sources say there will be no double role for Shah Rukh in Don 2.

[...]

"We're shooting Don 2 in Dublin. No Indian film has been shot there. We want to make sure that the sequel goes ahead of the first film. While the first part was a remake (of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Don), the sequel is an original script and would be much tougher to film for Shah Rukh and Farhan," producer Ritesh Sidhwani told IANS.

And there's Priyanka Chopra for company again. Though the actress has apparently been left out of Dostana 2, she's very much part of Don 2.

"We're very much going ahead with the original cast of Shah Rukh, Priyanka, Boman Irani, Arjun Rampal and Om Puri. Only those who died in the original won't return, obviously," said Sidhwani.

They've left out an important person - - Don's girl ! Shouldn't Ishaa Koppikar be in too ? Hope she 'll be there and get to do more in the sequel. I always have this feeling she's been denied fair opportunities in B'wood.

Don in Dublin.... as a Celticist, my mind boggles. Don infiltrates At Swim-Two-Birds and partners up with the Pooka Fergus mac Felimy while Arjun, Priyanka, and Om Puri join forces with the Good Fairy?

Hahaha!!! I second this like you wouldn't believe. Especially the Bono part, for some reason. Although watch him him try take over the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy soundtrack or something. Tongue

'I can't imagine making a film without Boman Irani'

Farhan Akhtar, writer, filmmaker and actor, came to New York last week with his director-sister Zoya Akhtar for the screening of Luck by Chance at the I View Film festival. "Film festivals are important as they often provide an opportunity to look at a film from a fresh perspective," the 35-year-old filmmaker said.

He readily admitted that when he worked on a project he did not think of making a film that catered to a special audience. "It is the story that should hold my attention," he said. "I don't tell myself, I am going to make a film with a message or this is going to be a socially relevant film. Whatever films I make, the mandate is that it should touch the audiences and engage them from the first scene."

Akhtar, the son of writers Javed Akhtar (Sholay and Deewar) and Honey Irani (Lamhe and many other films), has collaborated with his father on several projects. He chats with Arthur J Pais:

What are some of the challenges you have set for yourself in the Don sequel?

Even when I was writing the script for Don, I suspected it could lead to a sequel. I wanted to be faithful to the original Don [which Javed Akhtar wrote with Salim Khan] but in my film, the villain lived. I was amazed at the way people were fascinated by this villain. Of course, they were not endorsing what he did but they were so intrigued and fascinated by him that they wanted so see more of him.

In the first film I felt the obligation to be faithful to the original Don to a great extent. I kept telling myself while making the first Don: don't try to be very smart. But now I feel I am free, and this is going to be my baby. At the same I know the audiences are expected many surprising twists in the sequel. One of my challenges is to know that the audiences are waiting for the big surprises and give them something they could not have imagined. It is not going to be easy but I feel it can be done.

Why is he so special to you?He is a versatile artist -- and a great human being. And then how many actors do we have of his age that are so extraordinary? In the 1950s through 1980s, there were many stalwart character artists. But today there are so few. That is another reason to treasure Boman.
I'm so glad that Farhan's as much of Boman fan-girl/guy as I am!

Did anyone else wince a little at this sentence? "Oh I love Boman - he's a great character actor."

I really hope we see more of Shahrukh as a villain in this film. It's a long time since I've seen him do a decent villainous act. I was kinda dissapointed in the first Don cause I knew what a great villain he could be and I thought he didn't show his full potential. I also think he should give Don some psychotic tendencies as seen in his other negative roles from the past. I'm really craving for the psycho SRK to come back.

Well in the first Don he really couldn't be as villainous as we would have liked him to be throughout the entire film because
Spoiler (hover to show)
I actually really liked him as a villain in that film. He made Don bad ass!

I've highlighted an interesting paragraph in this recent news report - according to Farhan, Don 2 is being written by himself and two fans.

======

"Don 2 is being written by three Don fans and not my father" - Farhan Akhtar

By Subhash K. Jha, June 10, 2009 - 17:23 IST

Known to be utterly gregarious and accessible, Farhan has suddenly withdrawn into a shell. Before well-wishers could presume the worst, the truth has come out in the open.

His current acting assignment, Kartik Versus Kartik with Deepika Padukone which is almost done provoked these withdrawal symptoms.

Since the part requires him to be a lonely brooder, Farhan has lately switched off his phone and become almost inaccessible to the world outside. "It was the nature of the character I was playing. He's a guy lost in his world. So I was making an effort to isolate myself," he says.

Friends found Farhan's behaviour strange since usually he is so reachable and gregarious. "Lately I've just been switching off from the world for the sake of my character. If you want to call it method acting, so be it," says Farhan.

Farhan won't be cast in Abhishek Kapoor's second film, though it's being produced by Farhan's company. "Gattu has very specific ideas on whom he wants to cast. If he thinks I don't fit any part that's fine. I'm just happy producing his film."

Now Farhan prepares to shoot for Don 2. His father Javed Akhtar will not be a part of the sequel to Don. The first part of the film had been written by Javed saab. Don 2 has a different team of writers which includes Farhan.

"The first film was my father's vision. He had written the original Don featuring Mr. Bachchan. But Don 2 is being written by fans only. These are yours truly and two new enthusiastic boys Ameet and Amreesh who came to me with their ideas on how the story can be carried forward. I've thrown my ideas at them. Don 2 is basically being written by three Don fans who are having a ball carrying the story forward.

About the exclusion of his father Farhan explains, "He cannot be a fan of Don because he conceived it."

Farhan's heart is set on his pet project Voice From The Sky which got stalled by casting setbacks. "It's strange. No matter who it is and no matter how big or small the director, everyone of us is facing casting problems. Finding the right actors has become a major problem. Voice From The Sky did get delayed because I couldn't find the right actor. But I know I'll come back to it. And one day when you see it, you'll realize why I had to make this film."
