I spotted quite a few pictures of clothes in this thread that shouldn't be on that board since the clothes aren't worn by members of a South Asian film industry (e.g.). So...

Post pictures of your desired Indian fashion or other clothing by Desi designers here in this thread! Provide a link to where it can be purchased if possible.

^ The white sari and the pink lengha are gorgeous. Looks like kind of a sixties hair-style there on the lady wearing them.

The two saris seem to be the easy kind of saris - I don't mean the ready to wear ones, but a different kind where there seems to be some extra cloth that flares the bottom like as though it was pleated, but is actually just wrapped around.

I was tempted to buy it once on a visit to London, but didn't.

Nice thread idea by the way. Do we need a separate thread for shoes and purses maybe? Accessories are awesome too. Lol.

Only the top-left outfit in the first post is a saree. The two top-right outfits are ghagras, the bottom-left is an anarkali dress and the bottom-right is a gharara suit. The top-left outfit shouldn't be labelled as a "saree" - it should either be labelled as a "fitted saree", a "lehnga" or what some South Indians call a "thaavani".

If you look carefully you will see the triangular piece that I am talking about. It is in plain pink.
These saris do a good job of looking like a sari and I am seriously thinking of buying one.

Here's a clearer picture of this style.

And yes, the white 3 piece, - I missed the third piece that one sees starting on the left hip of the model.

^ I missed that piece too, I now see it's a ghagra also. It's a really pretty outfit either way.

some more examples of this kind of saris.

A very clear one. It's not a lehnga. She's just not draped the pallu properly (most probably to show off the full design).

I'm still kind of confused by the outfits that look like lehngas but aren't. Could someone add to the Classification of Indian Attire thread and explain how many pieces are involved, etc?

^ Lengha always has three pieces: the lengha, the choli, and then the separate fabric that is a rectangle and goes around the waist/back while the sari is one piece of fabric only and then under it is a blouse. I am not doing great with explaining this so I hope someone can explain it better for you. Lol.

By the way, does anyone have recommendations for good BW fashion blogs that have nice photos of Indian saris and lenghas, etc? I love Indian clothes and haven't found many.

Yeah, I know lenghas and saris, it's the outfits that aren't either pictured above that I'm unfamiliar with.

There's Saree Dreams, Asian Fashion Blog and then you might want to browse through the list of blogs I ♥ Makeup links to (lower right side of page).

These are actually lehenga style sarees - coming into fashion recently.
Here's another one (not my favorite but it shows the design well):

*Gasp* - Oh boy... designer, jewel-encrusted Sherwani's are the sexiest thing ever in my book.  Just love it.

Anyone know the names of some top desi designers?  I've always been curious.  When I've googled for them, their websites are always so flash-intensive that I get impatient and give up.  I'd love to see some of the top designer's creations...

For some reason, people are thinking this thread is about lengha-style sarees. Maybe I should rephrase the OP...? Huh

I had a whole bunch of beautiful indian clothes from websites saved on my computer, but unfortunately my harddrive died on me... and I hadn't backed up any of my stuff. Cry   Otherwise, I would have had some real gems to contribute to your thread.

I do know a few names of South Asian menswear designers, but bear with me - I'll be posting some of their designs that I like soon. I don't know the name of the designer for that particular sherwani, but if you click on the picture, it will link you to the seller's non-Flash website which includes contact details.

NB: The clothes aren't the only reason why I posted those pictures. Grin

Highheelconfidential has a directory. Not all of them have online sites.  And some of the online sites aren't that good. But nevertheless, here it is.

http://www.highheelconfidential.com/the-directory/

Some names of designers not listed there off the top of my head.

Abdul Halder, Rohit Bal, Ashish Soni, Wendell Rodricks,

P.S. just want to make sure, since contemporary is included. I realize it can be contemperary Desi clothes. But can we include Indian fashion designers' creations that are not particularly traditionally Indian?  I have some beautiful pictures saved somewhere from one designer's collection of Grecian drapes.

Yes, of course you can - so as long as the designer is South Asian and the clothes aren't filmi-related like it says in the original post. Perhaps this thread should include Indian fashion accessories and non-filmi Indian/Indian-style clothes by non-Desi designers...?

I'm hoping those of you with saved pictures of your favorite desi fashions will post them here.  Here are some that struck me as I perused various fashion/photo sites.  I tend to love anything that is a fusion of traditional indian styles/fabrics with non-indian influences.  One thing that strikes me though is how there is never much unique designs for the sari.  It is almost always presented plainly wrapped or maybe with some small variation to the blouse, bottom, or the addition of a jacket or scarf.  I would just love to see a designer take advantage of all the various ways saris can be wrapped and use it for high fashion.

Anyway, here's some pics I liked:

The last two are by Rohit Bal who tends to design insane, poofy, fluffy, space-age creations!  Check some out more of his designs on the runway here.

I really like this one, and unlike a lot of stuff you see on ramps, I can actually see Indian women wearing this. Also, I love that designers seem to bringing back pieces of clothing that fell out of style back in the day, like the Jodhpurs. If I were a designer, I would look back into my community's history (because of how different clothes were for every community) and look for inspiration there or something I can modernize to fit today's taste. I, personally, would be curious to see what modern designers could do to clothing (like the chatta mundu) that only old people wear now. Reduce the sleeve length, tighten it around the body, give it some bling, and you might have something new that people would wear today.

It's not on the computer I've been using during the summer.  So it might take me a while. But I will when I get the chance.

Exactly!  India has such a vast, rich draped clothing history to draw from- such endless possibilities!  I get so bored seeing the same old western styles in the collections of some of these desi designers.  I don't want to see the same stuff I can see in Paris or London- I want to see Indian influences!  I suppose desi designers don't *have* to draw from their cultural/historical tradition, but I wish they would do so more. Smiley Or maybe it's just that I/we're not familiar enough with all the designers out there- I'll have to keep searching.  I'm sure others out there are much more familiar with the Indian fashion world than I am. Smiley

We'll look forward to seeing them! Cheesy

I have two uncles who are fashion designer, one who has actually designed for Vasundhara Das in one of her films. I'm not particularly close to him, but if I see him in India this summer, I think I might ask him about this/suggest it to him.

Loved these pants I saw in a magazine.  Here's the pic (a bit hard to see on the white background) and the description:

I immediately thought of the patiala salwar (pant) style when I saw them, but the description calls them Jodhpurs.  Leaf, you had mentioned Jodhpurs a couple posts back; would you call these pants Jodhpurs?  I thought Jodhpurs, from what I saw googling, were the "roomy at the top" horse-back riding style pants.  Anyway, I love the pants in the pictures- a nice example of turning an ethnic style into high fashion.
