In Ayan, Surya plays a guy who makes others laugh and the film is said to be a romantic comedy with lots of action. Tamanna plays a bubbly girl and Prabhu also plays an important role.

Surya is all praise for Anand`s script, and said it was Anand who took his first still photo and later on showed it to Mani Ratnam for Nerukku Ner. He also added, a professional set up like AVM with whom he had done Pearalagan, had encouraged him to do Anand`s movie.

Says Surya who lost nearly 15 kilos for Vaaranum Aayiram: ` I think the script of Anand and Subha is fantastic, along with Harris`s music. Harris has provided music for three of my films Khakka Khakka, Ghajani and now Vaaranum Aayiram and has always provided chartbusters for me.` In picture: Surya and Tamanna at the press meet

This upcoming movie sounds fantastic, from the little that can be gleaned online.  According to what I've read, it's releasing April 3 and has been dubbed into Telugu and will be released simultaneously as "Veedokkade."

Here's excerpts from a BehindWoods interview with the director, K.V. Anand (who also directed Sivaji, Mudhalvan, etc):

"BW: What does Ayan mean?
K.V. Anand: One meaning is mythological, referring to Brahman. An even earlier meaning for the word is outstanding, excellent,

What more can you tell us about Ayan?
Usually when a Tamil movie involves young people, then automatically there must be fights, and it must be an action story. But what about telling the story of a young man: his dreams, his struggles his victories? There are about three fights in the film, but the focus of the film is the hero’s character. His growth, the graph of his live. Logic is important in this film. Inner logic. The logic of character determining fate. And yet Ayan is a commercial film, out and out. When Surya heard the story first, he didn’t want any changes. Usually, a star will want one or two changes, but Surya admired story. Even Harris Jayaraj liked it. They said it was a thrilling story.

Surya is deep into his six-pack training. His fans, specially the girls, are excited. How did this happen? Did you want him to do this for his role in Ayan?
No- that was something he wanted to do. He works hard and takes initiative. When I first met him on the sets of Nerukku Ner, I couldn’t believe there was a young star that was this innocent. He had left his export business and come reluctantly into cinema. I feared for him: how will he survive in the industry, I wondered. But then I needn’t have worried. He is such a fast learner, and trained quickly under directors like Mani Ratnam, Bala, and Gautham. My hero in Ayan is a young man of 23, and when Surya learnt that, he decided he would tone his body himself to look younger, fitter."

*Ahem*.  The six-pack.  Yes, some of those tantalising images of Surya over on the Best-looking South Indian Actors Poll Nominations thread were images from AYAN!!  Remember them?  Let me jog your memory...

And here's the word from filmysouth.com on Surya's stunt capabilities:
"Actor Suriya took part in a very risky stunt sequence for 'Ayan'.  The fight involving him and as set of stuntmen as baddies was shot at the edge of a 600-feet gorge. The director K.V. Anand was for using a body double in his place. But Suriya insisted on doing the stunt himself, and got away with it. The actor, who took great pains to build the six-pack figure for the armyman role he did in 'Vaaranam Aayiram', pulled off the difficult stunt with relative ease, to the amazement of everyone present.  Kanal Kannnan, the stunt choreographer, appreciated Suriya's courage and skill. He expresed the hope that the stunt would prove a highlight of 'Ayan'.  The film stars Suriya and Tamannaah and it introduces Akashdeep Sehgal as the villain."

Here's some more stills:

And this Akashdeep Sehgal villain fellow?  He looks pretty tasty too:

And there there's Tamanna, who I have become a big fan of, looking glamorous as well (and she's been working on learning Tamil!).  Oh, yes!  I think Ayan will be a must-see film.  Can't wait!

Oh.  I like my men a little realistically soft around the middle, and was glad to have Indian cinema provide them to me.  Darn globalisation of beauty standards.

Would still be interested in seeing this, though, as Surya strikes me as an intelligent actor who's good at choosing interesting roles, and performs well with them.

I hate to break it to you, but he does not look this good in the film. He plays a run-of-the-mill wide-eyed psychotic Tamil movie villain, only also tossing his long hair around for extra flair.

I quite liked this movie. Surya plays Deva, a member of the top smuggling gang in Chennai only - like Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital - his boss Dass refuses to deal in drugs. It makes a nice change from the usual 'rowdyism' you see in Tamil movies. The main conflict occurs when Kamalesh, the boss of a rival gang - one that has no qualms about joining the drug trade - decides he would like to be number one and sets out to destroy Dass, Deva and the rest of their gang. There's also a subplot involving Deva's romance with his friend's sister, played by Tamannah.

Part of the action takes place in "the Congo" (although it was filmed in Tanzania and Zanzibar, and Namibia) which is another nice change, this time from the usual foreign locations used in Indian films. There's a great Bourne Ultimatum-inspired chase sequence through some African slums.

The songs are all good, except for an item number featuring some chick who looks like she's had too much plastic surgery on her face, which made me wish they'd filmed it with Mumaith Khan instead.

Surya and Tamannah have nice chemistry. I liked the way their relationship started - there was no period of him pursuing her while she pretends to be annoyed or vice versa. Tamannah is great in her role, she manages to be girlish without being too coy or becoming insipid.

I pretty much loved everything about this movie. The drama was just right, the characters were well thought out, and the action made sense. I particularly appreciated how Chitti (Tamanna's brother) was portrayed, loved his reaction when his loyalties clash, and his justification. So simple and sincere, none of that villain just for the sake of being a villain or goodie-two-shoes just for the sake of being good. I also loved his chemistry with his sister. Ok, so in a nutshell I loved everything about his character. Even the hair!!!  Grin

Tamanna I already knew I liked, and she didn't disappoint me: she's hilarious when she's making faces and acting ditsy, and she didn't go over the top in the more dramatic scenes, which made me even forgive the fact that she tries too hard to be sexy in some of the songs. Must see more of her. My only complaint with her is that just like Trisha, she strikes me as a cold beauty type of look. As in out of the "come hither - no, go away" equation, the go away part was the more prominent. But that doesn't keep her from being sexy, so no issues there.

The guy who played Dass was also well into his character, which is again to be appreciated when most of the time filmi characters are divided into "the good guys" and "the bad guys".

As for Surya, well it took 3 films, but finally I got to the one that made me understand why some people are totally gaga about him. As I said before, he looks impossibly good in this movie. Excellent chemistry with Tamanna too. I didn't know he had those playful characters/moments in him. It also hit me while watching this that he'd make a great villain, a la Sonu Sood in Dabangg. What a great idea: a movie with Sonu as the hero and Surya as the villain. And with a Mumaith Khan number in between the two of them (did you hear that Koena Mitra??? And learn how to dance too, anyone can pose!).  Cheesy

(I'm sorry! I guess I cheated as Ayan was my first Surya movie.  Smiley I had liked Tamanna very much in Kalloori and Ayan looked like fun (I saw Kallu Moosi Yochisthey (Vizhi Moodi) on TV when in Hyderabad and decided I needed to see the movie it came from!) But as you didn't absolutely hate Vaaranam Aayiram or Kaakaa Kaakaa, I don't feel too bad.  Wink )

I think 'Chitti's' name is Jagan (/Jegan?) and I totally agree!! He was awesome. And unfortunately, in thinking about it, there seem to be (that I can think of) very few other commercial/masala movie where a supporting actor (who is not Prakash Raj!) actually gets such wonderful character development and screen time.

Yeah, for me Surya's that rare combination of super-photogenic and highly entertaining, at least in goofball lover/cheesy action hero mode; I don't particularly care for him in emo mode.

I watched, I don't know, twenty, thirty minutes of this one, found the early smuggler-related stuff boring, then got ticked off when they started being snotty about Africa (specifically throwing AIDS jokes around) and turned it off.

Well I watched Veedokkade, the Telugu dubbed version of this because I couldn't find Ayan with subtitles.  I liked it.  It's the best I have seen Surya look in a movie yet.  He was so HOT!.   I really liked the storyline of Deva and Yamuna, the actress who plays her Tamannaah Bhatia, was very likable and pretty and not annoying at all.  So refreshing!  I also liked the role of Chitta, not the typical stereo type role of side kick AT ALL!  I loved the song where Suyra has all the disguises!

Overall I like the movie, but didn't like the Item number in the dance club, as someone already mention, the item girl was disgusting.   I also disliked the story line of

Yeah I loved this too! Surya was hot the action was awesome...Loved the scenes in Africa especially the chase/fight scenes. Surya was totally H.O.T.! Kiss Kiss The music didn't stick with me but the story and the other actors specifically Prabhu and jagan did an awesome job.

Believe it or not, I hadn't seen this movie till yesterday. I always had this feeling that I wouldn't like this movie despite all the hype. Unfortunately my gut feelings were true.
I thought this was a well shot, but badly scripted movie. There was a lot of random, illogical stuff... but not in a good way. I thought it was only slightly better than the horrible Aadhavan script wise.

-I totally didn't buy Tamanna being the sister of Chitti... come on! Her introduction scene sucked, the romance was too quick and rushed.
-The villian sucked!!! He seemed like a joke rather than menacing.
-Surya looked good. I think that was the only reason for the hype about the movie.
-Action scenes were pretty good, but seemed inspired by Bourne.

Overall - dissappointing. 5/10

Ha! I thought exactly the same thing. I was pretty meh about the movie. Sure, Surya looked TOO gorgeous, but at the point where he let the baddie...

I pretty much lost hope. Also, the recurring struggle between Dass and Deva.

Let's kill that sonuvabiatch.
- Not yet.
Let's kill that bastard.
- No, let's wait until he does more harm.
*villain blows up house*
Ok, NOW can we kill him?
- No, no, let's wait some more...

R.I.P Dass.

Also, the part where they took the drugs out of Chitti was too feakin' graphic!! Gah! Lips Sealed

Every time the villain flipped his hair, I burst out laughing. Almost choked on my apple a few times. Tongue

Only loved the parts where Tamannah was involved. Loved her character and how NOT shy she was about wanting to be touched etc.. Cheesy How refreshing Smiley

And the ending? Maa in tears? Nice, didn't see that one coming... Roll Eyes Grin

Keeping the songs, the rest is very forgetable.

I totally loved this movie and have watched it numerous times since my first watch. Surya is just great here, I love that our main character actually actively pirates films and while the Nigeria portions were a little odd, overall it's just a great masala watch.

Tamannah is fast becoming my favourite actress working in the Southie industries.
