Look in your Oxford Hindi English under the headword Khuda immediately after the entry "Khuda na kare."

Or just check the spoiler....

Khuda na khwaasta!

We used to joke with that term - because when spoken, "khwaasta" is very close to "khaansta" (cough).  Smiley

They're synonyms.  khwaasta is the participle in Persian for 'desire' so the phrase means "may god not desire it." God forbid.

Same etymology as "khwaish"?

Koi baat nahin James sahaab, vaise maine sunaa hai ki kan kan me sona...Aisa hai to tum me bhi kyon na ho!

Balle Balle, interesting!  Yep, same etymology....

Verb: Khwaahstan
noun form: khwaahish
participle: khwaasta.

Note, you know LOTS of Persian words that follow this pattern, which I have listed elsewhere.

ex

verb: gardidan
noun: gardish

verb: guzaashtan
noun: guzaarish

verb: farmoodan
noun: farmaaish
