re: how to pronounce Kajol (first page of this thread), here she answers the question herself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAciqGCemog

By the way did Aamir and Kajol have some difficulties before Fanaa, since Aamir refers to 'them not expected to be in a movie together'?

I'm glad to see Merle Oberon on your list.

One person you might add to R is Rima, who plays mothers, like in KHNH.

And - here's an experiment I want someone else to do - print up all these photos, scramble them up, assign a number to each one, and ask people who don't know Bollywood to pick out the ten they think are probably the best-known ones.  I suggesat this because I would guess that someone might actually get some of them right.

I was hoping to find a big, better, natural close-up of Reema.  If anyone comes across a nice one, please post it.  Smiley

I want to point out that a few of these actors/actresses are NOT Bollywood film stars, such as Parminder Nagra and Merle Oberon. Just because they are Indian or Indian-born actors, doesn't mean that they're Bollywood film stars.

Since someone asked here how to pronounce Preity Zinta (my family who knows nothing about BW would so know the proper way to say her name!), I think I can ask... how do you say Bachchan?

On the Colbert Report, he mispronounced Preity's name (I thought he did at the time and I know for sure now), and I could tell reading the Colbert thread here that he mispronounced the almighty B's name...

So the first "ch" is not a hard K? I keep thinking it's Bak-chan, but that's not right. It's budgin? Oh, at least I know how to pronounce Shahrukh Khan. (So that's why so many newbies adore him - we can say his name and not sound like idiots! Er, not disparaging the names, just our non-Indian pronunciations.)

...how do you say Bachchan?

Miss Memphis, it's Airhead. That would be A-ir-head.

If that doesn't do the trick, you can always try the following: Ba-ch-chan.

Let's take this to the U.S. for a second: imagine saying Jackie Chan, only this time, you add the extra 'ch.' No hard 'ch's sounding like 'k's. As much as I'd like to mock that lastname with the substitution of the 'k,' it's not the correct way of pronouncing.

I thought that her name was pronounced as the English word "cajole" as in
"In the song 'Ledger, Ledger' from K3G, Kajol cajoles SRK into joining the dance."

Dancelover
Thodi Vidya Khatarnack Cheese Hai

oye the controversy continues. hmmm i'm not sure actually. i always thought it was pronounced as spelt kajol = kah=joal but when i was watching KWK with kads and SRK it was more like Kah-jewl. a subtle Jewl though.

Depends on the language you are speaking.  Smiley

Edited to add:  "Ka-jol" is the Bengali pronunciation (Kajol is half Bengali) and "Ka-jal" is the Hindi pronunciation.

ETA 2: I can't remember the various ways her name was pronounced on the Koffee With Karan show, but I've heard a very fascinating pronunciation of her name  Wink  by Gurinder Chadha, who is Asian Brit by way of Africa (can't remember which African country) and of Punjabi background.
