If you're a political junkie, or if you want to relive the thrill you found in the Obama campaign (as opposed to the reality of his administration), Politics of Love is a passable romcom (with an emphasis on the comedy). Shocking, but true. How against all odds it
wasn't
a soul-sucking 90-minutes I'll never get back is due to the dialogue writers and (mostly) good casting. Ladies will appreciate Brian White, who looks set to be a big star in Hollywood.
There was a lot of humor in the film, mostly broad, but some of it subtle. Though a lot of the humor isn't political, knowledge of the politics of the time will help you understand a number of jokes. The sharp dialogue was in sharp contrast to the often clunky plot developments and absurd manufactured crises and conflicts, such as Mallika's character's rivalry with the dragon lady in the local Obama campaign headquarters.
The other real letdown of the film was Mallika's acting; she wasn't up to delivering her lines well, though her expressions were fine.
The best performances were by the afore-mentioned Brian White, and Gerry Bednob (as Mallika's tender but stubborn father).
It's sad to say this, but the movie would have been much better with someone else instead of Mallika. As it is, it survives her presence but she definitely weighs it down.
