One of my favourites was “dilburra” – not sure if that’s how to spell it – from Dhoom1. The song with Uday Chopra and Esha Deol, and he is fixing her car, which broke down, while dancing for her in the rain. Lol. And she’s dancing with the umbrella. It’s pretty funny actually.

Does anyone else know what the symbolism of the rain in these songs is? I was just thinking about this the other day where there are so many songs (especially romantic ones) in the rain. mandipperous, the song you're referring to is Dilbara.

This might not be their specific intention but I always understood it as a symbol of 'coming alive' for lack of a better term. As in, the monsoon rains in India change the whole landscape and literally give life to the crops/trees/forests etc. So it is a very joyous occasion when the rains come (think Lagaan and the first song 'Ghanan Ghanan'). In India it usually doesn't just drizzle a bit some day at some random time in the year. Rain is really a big deal. Perhaps the joy associated with rain in India is sort of equivalent to the Western notion of things coming alive during spring.

And I guess it doesn't hurt that women look hot in wet saris Cheesy

Romance. The symbolism of rain. At least, that is my interpretation of it. It's just to create a romantic situation, I guess... generally speaking. The song Ghanan Ghanan in Lagaan wasn't to create a romantic situation for sure! It's just a nice image, isn't it... a refreshing shower of rains in a country as hot as India... and yes, idli lover's point that women (and men!) look hot in the rain.. it's... subtely sensual. I've never really looked for a deeper meaning in seeing rain in Bollywood romantic songs. I just take it for granted, like the umpteen dress changes for one six minute song! Cheesy

I wasn't implying that the rain in Ghanan Ghanan was to create romance but just to highlight that the seasonal rains are very very significant in India and so are welcomed and associated with joy/happiness.

Lol... I wasn't saying you were implying that. Smiley I was just clarifying that I thought it represented romance in general, and using Lagaan's song as an example of where it doesn't imply romance.

Both of those are great ideas! Also, if you need a comparison: compare Bollywood's romantic obsession with water/rain to Hollywood's romantic obsession with wind. Every time a Hollywood starlet meets her true love, the wind starts blowing.

My personal favorite is Barso Re. I particularly like this part because I can actually pull off this dance move without looking completely foolish.

It makes me want to go out, sing in Hindi, and dance in the rain. Very uplifting.

I'm a huge fan of rain songs as well (explains the lengthiness of the list, despite my listing of a tiny fraction of my favorites), and do believe that they bring a totally new and refreshing vibe to a possibly-dull film (granted that they take place within the context of the film, though; I'm not in the mood for five car crashes, a few folks getting shot in the groin area, grandma Lulu dying -- and we see our lovely heroine letting her tresses down and dancing her behind off just cause she wasn't in the mood for "natura"l cleansing (uhm, shower rings a bell?))

Below is a list of some of my favorite rain song/dance numbers:

Hum Tum Saath Dono from the less-known Mithun film, Tarana, co-starring Ranjeeta. I absolutely loooooooooove this song and the fact that they're both getting wet and having fun without either one of them making a huge fuss out of it. BEAUTIFUL rendition by Shailendra Singh and Usha Mangeshkar.

Hai Hai Yeh Majboori from Manoj's Roti Kapda aur Makaan. The first time I laid my eyes on this video and observed the village scenery in the background, I knew I had to be a part of it. Just the feeling one attains from looking at it - a completely homely feeling of comfort and assurance. Takes me back to the yesteryears when I would visit my aunt and my cousins in their village home (not India, though). Aah, great times!

I do have one disagreement if you will with the video and that is the actress; would have preferred a more "warmer" actress (say a Rakhee or Sharmila Tagore) since they actually fit perfectly into the more "traditional" element of a rain number, though I'd give this one to Zeenat anyway.

Na Jane Kahan Se - from the perfection that is Chaalbaaz. There are certain roles where Sri is just born to play, hence... She has perfect timing with her comic acts, and her chemistry with Sunny Deol is beyond believable. They surely made an exceptional team together (though the Sridevi/Anil Kapoor jodi cannot be topped nor replaced -- EVER!!).

I love her cute outfit and the way she's twirling her umbrella. Sri is just too much!

Aaj Rapat Jaaye To from Namak Halal. How else can you praise this awesome number but by granting it the title of a "Must-See/Hear Classic"? For one, I looooooooove the beginning up-tempo melody - it's THE perfect type of music for my taste. Amitabh's hilarious antics, facial expressions and gestures are the highlight of the film just as much as Smita's shy and reserved ways are; complementing one-another by being on opposite poles. Lastly: rain, rain, rain! Too much water -- I LIKEY!

Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua from Shree 420. Beyond classic! Masterpiece! You know of its significance when you hear people of all ages and backgrounds - without understanding a word of Hindi - singing it from beginning 'till the very end. The impact is certainly tremendous!

As if the song itself didn't do justice on itself, you also catch a glimpse of little Rishi, Randhir and Reeta (I believe it's Reeta; cannot be Reema) at the 3:38 mark.

Jaane Kya Pilaya Tune from Jugnu. Gorgeous goddess in my favorite color of all, looking like the most vibrant red rose that she is. Couple that awesomeness with a load of handsom-ness and you get a hit/masala/call it what you want.

This is definitely a very fun rain song/video. It's funny because prior to the approaching of this video, Prem Chopra's character adds alcohol in Hema's Cocacola, hence her state of drunkenness. I say you can spot an amateur drunkard from a mile away.

Lagi Aaj Sawan Ki Phir Wo Jhadi Hai from Chandni. One of those songs which only get better with additional hearing. The picturization is par excellence as well - simple, yet tasty - as we watch when Vinod Khanna's character is suddenly reminded of his beloved - Juhi Chawla.

Yash Chopra is an ace at rain songs/white saris, so, here ya go!

Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Simply love this song! I think Kajol looks very cute - especially in her white outfit (Yash/Aditya Chopra!) - and it's being cute without the addition of annoyance (a usual for some actors!). I cannot stand Kajol's off-screen persona, therefore, this is how I like to remember her as (granted that I've only seen three/four films of hers).

Shahrukh is hilarious with his scenes (e.g. where he misses his flight).

Dam Dam Diga Diga from Chhalia. Kapoor. Mukesh! Shankar-Jaikishan. What more could one ask for?

The song is pure perfection, as is the humor embedded in the context of the video.

Manmohan Desai's very first hit (and second production, after Janam Janam Ke Phere) - before he went all "flying horses" and "reappearances of family members after fifty years" on us.

Gore Rang Pe from Roti, starring my mother's favorite couple. I don't understand what people see in the Rajesh/Sharmila Tagore combination? I think they're blah, whereas Mumtaz completes Rajesh in every aspect; she's the yin to his yang.

I knew I had to put one in there!

While I was typing, I had the Hema number in mind but wanted to add toward the end of the page (since there is no longer a video of it on YouTube), but, as it seems, it slipped my mind. It's not only one of my ALL-TIME rain songs/videos, but songs as a whole.

I once heard the monsoon rains being described as "erotic", and I can totally see that. The lushness and fertility of the land when, and after it rains is so moving that it almost becomes sexual.

Nice to know this thread exists.  I love rain songs.

Surprised that no one has yet mentioned the quintessential rain song in my opinion.  Its "Pani Re Pani Tera Rang Kaisa" (Water, Oh, Water - What color are thou?) from the film Shor staring a very young and pretty Jaya Bhaduri and Manoj Kumar.  The striking workers are celebrating the first rains by extolling the virtues of water.

Of course there’s stuff that’s already been mentioned…like Dheere Jalina (Paheli), Pyaar Hua  Iqraar Hua (Shree 420), Ghanan Ghanan (Lagaan), but I also like
