 Hi people !

I'm new to this forum.

First of all,I must say I'm litterally flabbergasted by the accurate English translations of the Bollywood songs I find by the BollyWHAT team in the Lyrics Corner.

Actually, native of Mauritius,I grew up in the Bollywood culture but unfortunately mastered only rudiments of Hindi ; I now wish to seize exact meanings of Hindustani (i.e.,Hindi/Urdu ) words I listen in popular Bollywood songs and film dialogues.

I thought you proficient guys might be aware of some fine online dictionary and translation servers from Hindi using Devanagiri fonts. (A prior google search didn't prove to be very much satisfying).

Thank you very much in advance for providing  me a couple of links you know in relation to my quest and request !

You might have a look at the Resource room section of the forum - the thread on dictionaries may discuss this topic.

The only two on-line dictionaries I know of that are anything near comprehensive are shabdkosh.com and the Platt's dictionary of Urdu and Hindi.  Shabdkosh.com, though, won't help you that much with filmi Hindi-Urdu - its focus is more on shuddh Hindi.  Platt's, on the other hand, will have most of the words that you are likely to encounter in filmi songs.  Its a little confusing to use at first but once you get the hang of it you will see how comprehensive it is.  One caveat:  Urdu words are not in Devanagari in Platt's, so you may do better searching in transliterations than in Devanagari for some filmi lyrics,

When I do translations I tend to work in paper, rather than on-line - and I have almost never managed to stump my trusty Oxford Hindi-English dictionary.  The only words I couldn't find in there were a couple of words from a song that was intentionally written in very chaste Urdu.

Welcome to the forum, and I hope you will join our discussions as well.

Many a thanks for your kind reply Carla !

I followed your suggestions gearing me towards the forum's  Reference section ,but that didn't help much with respect to my initial query (Instead that only added to my frustration since I now want to download a Devanagiri font program but can't achieve it successfully !!)

The two links you provided are pretty fine tools, especially the "shabdkosh" which I knew already. What I wanted was an online server with Devanagini keyboard that either gives word definition and/or synonyms ( I once stumbled on it but unluckily failed to bookmark it,alas :It's got a URL address that reads something like "www.hinduonnet")

Actually,I own a couple of fine Hindi-French dictionaries {since I also speak French (amongst others) having spent half of my life-time in France},the best to my knowledge ,which are quite useful to me:

Hindi Français : Dictionnaire Général (N & J.K.Balbir),

Dictionnaire Français Hindi (F.Boschetti)

By the way, could you recommend me a dictionary title which translitterates Urdu words into Devanagiri ?

As usual, your advice and recommendations are precious to me.
