Thanks Cheesetikka!  I find 'ilaya nila' just hypnotic (stumbled upon it randomly one day on youtube).  I don't know any of the other songs, but I feel I will be spending more quality time with youtube now that you started this thread!

I'm also planning to branch out into South Indian films this year -- are there any particular films you would recommend that showcase Illayaraja's music well?

I love ilayaraaja's song but ilaya nila and the hindi song neele neele ambar par have just an identical chorus!  Shocked

Erico, Ilaya Nila is the original.   Supposedly Ilayaraja and Kalyanji Anandji exchanged a few songs, according to I2FS.  The guitar pieces in Ilaya Nila are fantastic.

Some nice songs there meenkaran. I have heard the Tamil version of Chempoove and it has been a favorite of mine for a long time.
