LOSTSOULD7:

Hi, i was just curious: is bhangra Punjabi or is it Hindi or can it be either/both? Because i have some Indian friends who speak Hindi but they say they like listening to bhangra and they have been to a party where they played only bhangra? i'm kinda confused...

BOLLYWHAT?:

From http://www.rhythmsoftheglobe.com/gr/mu_ar_bhangra.htm

Bhangra, the folk music of India, was born in Punjab North India. Since the 15th century Bhangra has celebrated the harvest season. The music centers on the heavy beat of the double-barreled drum called the dhol. The lilting and fast-tempo beats of the dhol, entwined with the singing of traditional folk songs, have allowed Bhangra to travel through the centuries and transcend musical and language barriers.

With elements of romance, dance and illuminating voices interspersed with the potent beat driven rhythms the music possesses a certain glow. Now, a range of music styles, including reggae, rap and hip-hop, is influencing Bhangra and its pulsing beats are becoming indistinguishable from Western pop music. The albums featured here reflect this fusion.

*********

Pretty Woman from Kal Ho Na Ho is a good example of a Hindi song with a bhangra beat. In general, the bhangra "flavor" is very popular right now, and you'll hear it in a variety of music -- from officially Punjabi bhangra to Hindi film songs to, as the above blurb mentions, fusion music. But when people say they listen to "bhangra," they usually mean the Punjabi-language music genre associated with Daler Mehndi et al, which in itself has become popular all across India and in the Indian diaspora.

Hope this answers your question...!

JASROOP:

Just gotta stick my two-cents into this because I love my bhangra music too much .

Daler Mehndi is a pop artist not a bhangra artist. A lot of Punjabi people dislike his music because it doesn't represent bhangra. Daler Mehndi seems to be the first name that pops into the mind of non-Punjabis when they talk about bhangra, but his music is quite different than bhangra.

(I know this doesn't have anything to do with the original post and I apologize for that but I just dislike seeing Daler Mehndi grouped with the genre I have a huge passion for)

If you ever want suggestions for bhangra music I'll be more than happy to suggest some good new and old stuff.

DANIELM:

Could you be so kind as to reccomend some "real" bhangra? All the stuff i seem to find online is all electronic remixes of bhangra, or pop-bhangra, and I just want to find some good, normal, not-remixed bhanga!

DRAGUN:

Gurdas Mann?

ZAKHM-E-DIL:

Manmohan Waris - Teri Chardi Jawani Nay
Manmohan Waris - Dil Te Maar Gaye
Sukshinder Shinda - Daroo

Good punjabi songs. get them all @ desiest.com/music/

AISHA:

some of these are remixes or more "modern" but theyre nice to listen to.

Jazzy B: Sardara

Immortal Bhangra: Tera Yaar Bolda

RDB: tera tumka (its more of pop bhangra but a great song to dance to)
shera vargi jaan (also a remix)

Sukhbir: saudha kara kara

dalvinder singh:nachde punjabi

babbu mann: kabza; sauun di jhadi

I'm no expert, but I love Bhangra, both more traditional stuff and electronic-enhanced dancy stuff. Some artists and albums that I like:

Artists (in no particular order):

Malkit SIngh
Gurdas Maan
Harbhajan Mann
Surjit Bindakhia
Hans Raj Hans
Jasbir Jassi
Jazzy B

For more dancy stuff, try Bally Sagoo or Punjabi MC. Aaja Nachle is a good Bally Sagoo album

Collections:

#1s The Greatest Bhangra Hits (universal)
Ultimate Bhangra (saresama/HMV)
Bhangra Militants #2
Bhangra Top vol 1
Bye-Bye 2003: Punjabi Hits

As for Daler, well,  it's true he's as much pop as bhangra (some of his songs really aren't bhangra at all) But I like him; his earlier stuff anyway. (I haven't heard his newest album but I do have the 2 before that and they, ah, mostly suck) I'd go for his earlier albums, maybe Ho Jayegi Balle Balle. I've also got a 2-volume compilation of stuff off his first few albums called The Best of Daler (magnasound) that I like a lot.

Really liking Lembher Hussainpuri right now.  The album Kade Kade yaar kar lai.
all time favorite is Kamal Heer's Masti 2.  Masti 1 is good too.
Rishi Rich and Juggy D, are of course, great.
B21's darshan is an all-time classic.
What else do you like?

that stick dance is called the Garba Raas.  It's a gujurati dance -- which makes sense since half the family was punjabi and the other half Gujju.

In the US, I dont think I've ever seen a garba that didnt end in bhangra, or a bhangra that didnt end in garba.

I'm going to be shopping at nehaflix.com in the next week or two for my brother's birthday and I wanted to get a Bhangra CD for myself while I'm at it. I'm looking at the albums already mentioned on this thread, but does anyone else have anymore suggestions? I love to dance so I think a Bhangra CD would be perfect. Does any happen to know title/artist/ablum of the first song played during this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5893739009895628106 I really love it would love to own it on a CD. Thanks.

Ah, that performance was awesome!

While I was in NYC, this guy recommended this bhangra CD called Absolut Bhangra, and it is really good!

I don't really recognize any of those songs, but I know the last one, Yaari Sajni is on the Absolut Bhangra CD.

Oh man, I love it too...  Im also interested in going beyond the pop stuff, but theres no good source around here. Bally Sagoo is good, but I like jhim less when he steeers iinto the reggae influenced territory. I like the subgenre caled Boliyan, with a lot of shifts in tempo/groove/key -  interesting!

Im developing a music project  at the moment  for a bhangra/metal/funk/jazz/Bollwood cover band - only I dont have a Hindi/punjabi singer anywehere in the area  Cry

No problem.  Smiley BTW, I've got the first CD, they actually just came out with an Absolut Bhangra 2. If it's as good as the first, I'm in!

It also depends on if people enjoy bhangra or just punjabi music in general. If you've got a good dholi, you're good to go with almost any song. The best dance songs, usually ALWAYS played at Punjabi parties include the following (new and old)
Tera Yaar Bolda - Surjit Bindrakhia (one of my favourites)
Tutak Tutak Tutiyan Hai Jamalo - Malkit Singh (my FAVOURITE - I have his autograph  Grin)
Main Hogaya Sharabi - Punjabi MC
Mundeya To Bachke - Punjabi MC
Jawani - Jazzy B
Naag - Jazzy B (i love this song)
Sardara - Jazzy B
actually almost ANYTHING Jazzy B
Chan Mere Makhna - Safri Boys
Chandigarh - B21
Darshan - B21
Jind Mahi - Jazzy B
Jind Mahi - Manak, etc (this is more boliyan, but it's amazing too)
Gur Nalon Ishq Mitha - Malkit
Koka Dil Le Gaya - Manmohan Waris
Rail Gaddi
Saun Di Jhadi - Babbu Mann (hehe, guilty pleasure)

Oh man, I could go on forever.
More than bhangra (which I already love) I absolutely ADORE just regular punjabi music..the slow stuff - the sad stuff, all of it! Anyone into any of that?
Manak, Lehmber, Gurdas Mann, etc. I personally am I fan of the old scholl stuff - the classic punjabi music - more than anything new..I don't like the remixed stuff...it soudns good yeah, but sometimes it takes away from the song and lyrics.

Yea, I grew up with hindi as well, but exposed myself to lots and lots of punjabi because I love it. Back in grade school me and my friends made a set of 5 cds with punjabi/bhangra, and that's usually the music I listen to, give or take my sad songs lol. What kind of music do you want? I have so much lol, it's insane. But I am, myself, more into hindi music as well. Cheesy

As far as just punjabi songs go, i'm a big fan of Hans Raj Hans. And for bhangra I absolutely adddoorreee B21.   Jaan is by far the best song of theirs.   Daler Mehndi is good for a corny favorite - I read somewhere that he isn't actually Punjabi, is that true?  And Sukhbir, I love his voice!

Had the opportunity last night to see Gurdas Maan in concert and it was wonderful! In addition to putting on a fantastic entertainment they gave away CDs of his latest album and his film WARIS SHAH on DVD....for free to everyone!!! Oh, and the bottled water was free to everyone in the audience as well!

Thanks for all the reccomandations!

Darshan - B21

The best part of this song has to be the little spoken introduction: "It's coming like Mr. Kipling...exceedingly good!"

That is so cheesy and dumb...yet I love it. Grin

Some recent Bhangra songs I got hooked to whilst in India.

Raj Brar - Chandigarh (Played everywhere...the album, Re-birth, is crap though).
Lembher Hussanpuri - 12 Bora De
Truskool ft Gurbhej Brar - Hai Meri Ma
And from the film Sajna Ve Sajna (kinda old now) Ballo Sagoo - Whiskey Di Botal Vargi. Grin
