Subhash K Jha is a film critic who writes for www.indiafm.com and other publications. He also wrote a book called "The Essential Guide To Bollywood" (if I recall the title correctly) a while back.

And he's written some very bizarre "helpful" open letters that were published in the last year+ to Maduri and Saif that were more hurtful than supportive, all the while congratulating himself on his connections to these people.

If liking Shah Rukh Khan makes me insane, then I'm proud to be a jhalla!  Evil  I thought from the way he said it in the interview it probably meant something like that, but I just wanted to be sure...

SRK to do a cameo with Big B

Vikas Hotwani

King Khan agrees to do a ‘blink and miss’ role in a Bachchan starrer...for a friend!

It doesn’t matter if the alleged competition between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan makes more news than their upcoming movies. When it comes to making a cameo for an old friend, rivalry takes a backseat and the urge to settle scores is postponed till the chance to play host at another awards function!

Ravi Chopra’s next film ‘Bhoothnath’ that deals with relationship between a grandfather and his grandson stars Amitabh Bachchan in lead and Shah Rukh in a ‘blink and miss’ appearance.

The credit of getting the King Khan for the film goes to the director Vivek Sharma. “Vivek had worked with Shah Rukh before. So when he approached him, Shah Rukh was very co operative,” informs Ravi Chopra.  While the movie’s shoot is set to resume next month, the production is expected to be completed by July. For those wanting a preview to this mega-starer, the first promos are expected to be aired in a couple of weeks to come.

This is a sign that Shahrukh is taking our suggestions to heart. Wink

Indian movie star Shah Rukh Khan says he could turn director
The Associated Press
MUMBAI, India: Bollywood's leading man Shah Rukh Khan says he wants to someday try his hand at directing films. But for now, he is still too busy being in front of the camera.

In the meantime, "I'll try and find something that will keep me involved with the process of film making," Khan told Cine Blitz magazine in its March issue. "Maybe five to six years down the line, when it's not so hectic and if I get a chance — maybe a smaller film."

But he would only try out the director's chair once he was sure he could give it his full attention.

"It will be too time consuming and I get really taken in by films," he said. "I'll get into every single detail and every small thing."

Khan, 41, is one of Bollywood's biggest heartthrobs and has acted in nearly 60 movies, including hits such as "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" ("Some Happiness, Some Sadness"), "Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Na" ("Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No") and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna ("Never Say Goodbye").

He is also currently the host of India's version of the popular game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire."

He said he could be interested in other aspects of the movie business such as setting up a special effects studio.

Interesting choices for his hit movies. I can see the NIFs now, "Not only are all these movies the same, they all have the same title, too!"  Tongue

Too bad this isn't an immediate interest. Do you think having time to "give it all his attention" means when he is no longer signing films? I wonder if he sees that happening in five to six years.

I think he won't stop signing films, but may do fewer, and then have time for directing.

I wonder if the person who wrote that article knew what s/he was doing in choosing those titles - and chose them just to be funny - or if s/he was told something about the movies with K's in their titles and thought those were the right ones.

those two (K3G & KANK) are not worthy of KHKN Grin...

but yeah, i don't get why the author chose those 3 movies...kind of random order considering K3G & KANK are pretty/really recent and KHKN came out nearly 14 years ago.

I couldn't stop giggling at his look when he thinks the song is over...but it isn't and it starts all over again!  Grin

Looked at through his eyes, that entire sequence isn't so glitzy after all...it starts looking quite tawdry and foolish....Dev Saran was an alien in that world and so was Maya (and I think I'm drifting back to the KANK thread, again so I'll stop rightaway!)

Has anybody the time and ability to find an online version of the cineblitz march issue interview with SRK? I read it at www.srkfanatic.net (thanks for scanning the pages, srk-fanatic  Smiley) and think it's a keeper. Interesting stuff about OSO, what he thinks about himself and his career/future.

Here's the interview, I just typed up. If you can't tell, I'm avoiding work.  Wink Some of it is famliar, I think bits of it have appeared in other articles.

-----
A bountiful mind

I enjoy having conversations with Shah Rukh Khan. Any subject, any scale he gets to the pitch of it, snap like that! I enjoy digging into his vivid mind sometimes even more than watching his movies.

I will get it right someday – This text message from him sent post the release of Devdas, in response to my criticism of the film, surmises the actor for me – constantly climbing the mountain despite being on top of it.

I will get it right someday – Also speaks of the wistfulness of an actor caught in the morass of his own superstardom.

Shah Rukh would haven never forgiven himself if he had been born before the camera was invented. the make-believe world of celluloid is where he breathes most easy. After having known him and watched him for so many years (17 to be precise) and having had umpteen discussions with him on the business of Hindi movies, I have realized that Shah Rukh is a far more evolved person than he translates to as a star. His thoughts are often deeper than his films and his intentions always bigger than his performances. Even though he wouldn’t exchange his stardom for any other achievement in the world perhaps secretly he sometimes wishes that the road to success were paved differently. Just perhaps.

Q: Tremendous response to ‘KBC’?
SRK:
Yeah, it’s surprisingly been very good. I mean I knew it would be good, but I didin’t think it would be so good. ‘KBC’ had lost its novelty in a certain sense. I’m not deriding anyone but it’s bound to happen for any long running show. Now with the response they feel that they have been able to bring that novelty back in a certain sense. Of course there are a few rogh edges and one is always anxious about every show but yeah, generally, I’m more relaxed now. I feel I belong to ‘KBC’ now.

Q: Your ‘KBC’ is a sharp detour from the classical format of the show.
SRK:
I haven’t broken the format but it’s different because I am a different person. Otherwise one would end up doing just what has been done before. I think a lot of it is the way I am. I am being different. It is a concerted effort to be different. Because I am different. I don’t want to say ‘Lock It’. I don’t want to say ‘Sure…Confident?’ I want to say ‘Kaccha Kaccha Pacca Pacca’ I want to say ‘Alat Palat’ instead of flip the question. This is the way I am, a little more easygoing. My personality on or off screen is not over-awing; people don’t get overawed by me. I believe I make them more relaxed. I think I get my contestants to answer that one extra question because they are more relaxed.

Q: Did you speak with Mr. Bachchan before you took up ‘KBC’?
SRK:
No, I didn’t think that was necessary since I had already spoken to the producers and also the channel and made it very clear that I would do this show only if the earlier host was not doing it. Since they gave me that assurance I though it would be embarrassing to call up and ask Mr. Bachchan. I mean I don’t need to ask.

Q: Do you think maybe he expected that?
SRK:
I don’t know. I would not expect anyone else to call me if they were taking on my show. It’s a job, after I give it up, maybe someone else will take it up. If I’m not doing it how does it matter who does it? Somebody has to!

Q: Do you believe Mr. Bachchan hasn’t seen ‘KBC’ like he claims?
SRK:
If he says he hasn’t, then he hasn’t.

Q: There is evidently some strain between the two of you.
SRK:
I really don’t know. To be honest this is something that everybody talks about but I have completely stopped thinking about it. I don’t hold any importance to it anymore. I can’t be bothered about it anymore. I don’t want to think about it, because if I do I will get negative and I’m not negative. I don’t want to be negative. Mostly in my life I have never been negative. I’ve never tried to think too much or read into what other people are saying. I’ve got films to do, I’ve got kids to look after and I’ve got ‘KBC’ to shoot…What did he say? Why did he say it? Did he see it? Will he see it? Look, if he sees it it’s okay, if he doesn’t see it it’s okay. I’ve done it now…the hoardings are up and by the time this comes out some more episodes will be under the way…and that’s it.

Q: Bachchan said he didn’t like your version of Don.
SRK:
I like my version.

Q: The bigger the star the more difficult it is to let go of hype and popularity?
SRK:
I hope my son becomes a big star by that time (laughs). Seriously I don’t know. Is it possible for me to give this all up one day? Right now I feel I’ll have a lot of problems giving up my stardom but maybe as I grow older and, like you say, I’m involved in many other things related to filmmaking like setting up a special effects unit and making movies… I’ll try and find something that will keep me involved with the process of filmmaking…that should keep me good.

Q: There is always that danger of getting stuck in a warp if one refuses to renegotiate or redefine…if one refuses to evolve…
SRK:
I know you have to keep working at it…I’ll try to. I may have the blinkers on as far as my work is concerned but I’m not blind. I can see what is happening around me. Sometimes it hits me, shit, it’s all changing and I can’t change that fast! So I may not do it, but that doesn’t mean I’m not aware of it. Someday soon even I will have to sit across the table wit it. I will have to lessen work and increase quality.

Q: Films like Rang De Basanti, Omkara, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Being Cyrus, Khosla Ka Ghosla… seems like Hindi Cinema is finally breaking free. Seems like an exciting time for cinema enthusiasts.
SRK:
I am very excited. I’m anyway demented, yaar! People have to hold me back from myself. I find it exciting and tiring and scary also. It takes a lot of guts to give up your hold, your comfort zone. I know I can last for maybe another 5 to 6 years doing what I do best suit-vuit pehenke, baal banake, gaane gake. And I’m not saying that I don’t get enough chances to do different. Whenever I do I take it. Paheli, Asoka, Swades…But yes, simultaneously I’m scared of chances going wrong. So I try to keep it safe too, that’s a part of business strategy that I have. I don’t deny that. I play different and I play it safe too. I try to balance it so that when I wake up in the morning I don’t think that I’m not growing. Maybe a lot of people will still say that I am not. Maybe I’m not growing at the pace people want me to, maybe I don’t have the talent to go at that pace either, but within my own limitations, I try to do the best I can.

Q: When a star becomes bigger than his films it is eventually detrimental to both.
SRK:
It is, yes…but no narcissistic filmmaker is making movies only for me. I mean I have friends making films with me but I have lately been struggling to get a good role even with them. Sometimes, people who come to you with something different, end up making the similar thing because that stakes become too high. So I think you can’t always blame the star for staying put and keeping his butt warm.

Q: You were talking about not wanting to leave your comfort zone a while ago…
SRK:
Yes that too. Sometimes out of sheer laziness and tiredness I say arre no, I don’t want to try something different. Lazy and tired, not physically but mentally…I mean even of it’s as much as growing a moustache at times, or you know working harder at something I just don’t feel mentally up to it. A lot of times I take the easy way out, I say theek hai yaar, aise hi nikal jaoonga. Sometimes I am all charged up but many a time I just give up. And also I’m a little impatient. You know to do different or to do it differently you need patience. I think I need to develop that. I get easily bored. I think Chak De India is a little different.

Q: Om Shanti Om?
SRK:
Yeah, that will be completely whacked out. Om Shanti Om is honest. It’s honest and whacked out and demented. And also because it’s my own production we can take the extent. We can go for it full steam. We don’t hold back from making fools of ourselves.

Q: How’s Deepika Padukone, your new leading lady?
SRK:
She’s good. She’s very hardworking. Hard work takes care of the 80%. She looks good, she looks like a model and that’s what people like these days. And we are all there around her to support her. The joke on the set is that I bore her. Like Farah says she prefers calling Deepika when I am not shooting because then I bore Deepika with my lecture-baazi. Before every shot I talk to her for hours, in every shot. I’m like ‘this is the essence of the scene’and ‘this is how you do it’ and ‘I’ll do and show it’ and I talk about the subtext and what not…I think I just drive them all nuts. I think I’m getting old and stupid.

Q: Karan and you had some differences after KANK?
SRK:
I have no differences with him. I had issues with KANK. And Karan knows that very well. I told him it’s a complex film so don’t go too much into justification especially when you are treading into those grey areas of marital relationships. The film could have been a little smaller and more intimate. I told Karan lets keep it intimate, let’s make it just real about real people and the film will work. You make it big and it gets out of hand because now people are coming to see a Karan Johar film. Perhaps Karan’s not ready, he’s not mature enough in presentation. I told Karan that this film will get a lot of flak. I told him he will be killed after this film but that killing will be the nicest thing to happen to him because it will unshackle him and set him free. And I think that’s what’s happened to him. He’s not scared now.

Q: He doesn’t want to get back to his pink cinema?
SRK:
No, no, I don’t think so. We’ve reached an age where both of us don’t think that we can make Kuch Kuch Hota Hain anymore. I  know Karan more than that…he’s like no, I’m not going back to that space anymore.

Q: That would be suicidal anyways. That kind of cinema is passé.
SRK:
I don’t think he would even go for just a nice, good-looking, beautiful film any longer. I t will always be a little on the edge, I’m very sure. Maybe not Black Friday on-the-edge but definitely atypical.

Q: Do you think you will want to direct someday?
SRK:
I do, but it’s a very lonely job and very hectic. If I just take a year off maybe, but it’s difficult to do it while I’m acting. If I don’t just act in that one film, then maybe I think I’ll be able to direct. But it’s very, very difficult, yaar. It will be too time consuming and I get really taken in by films, I’ll get into every single detail and every small thing and so I’ll go mad. But maybe 5-6 years down the line…when it is not so hectic and if I get a chance…maybe a smaller film…□

this entire scenario cracks me up. so many actors (especially newcomers) praise Shah Rukh for being such a mentor on set, and here's Deepika probably rolling her eyes every chance she gets. meanwhile, Rukhie baby could bore me with lecture-baazi anytime. Tongue

it also trips me up when KJ's films are referred to as 'pink cinema' because in Japan, pink films refer to softcore pornos.

You're welcome.  Smiley I also liked the parts where he talked about OSO. It's been a long time since SRK has been in a whacky comedy (unless you count MHN), I can't wait! Did anyone else first read the line "The joke on the set is that I bore her." as a joke about their age difference?  Cheesy
