Tere Bina

Dum dara dum dara mast mast dara - 2
Dum dara dum dum
Oh hum dum bin tere kya jeena
Oh lover what's life without you?

Tere bina beswaadi
beswaadi ratiyaan, Oh sajna
without you the nights are colorless, flavorless (beswaad - without any flavor, tasteless)
Rookhi re oh rookhi re,
and sickly, like a malady
Kaatore kaate katena
try as I might, it won't pass

Na jaa chaakri ka mare na ja
don't go Don't go for the sake of duty
Souten pukaare
your lover is calling out to you My rival calls out to you
Saawan aayega toh poochega
when the rains come they'll ask where you are
Na ja re
please don't go

Pheeki pheeki beswaadhi
colorless, flavorless
Yeh Ratiyaan
are these nights
Kaatore kate na kate na
and they won't pass quickly
Ab tere bina sajna sajna
without you my lover
Kaate Kate na
Katena Katena tere bina
Tere bina beswaadi beswaadi
ratiyaan, Oh Sajna Oh

Tere bina chand ka sona khota re
without you the moonlight appears fake
Peeli peeli dhool udaawe jhoota re
everything is false, like dust in my eyes (im not sure if I'm right)Even the twirling dust in the morning rays appears fake
Tere bina sona peetal
without you gold is just brass
Tere sang keethar peepal
when you're there everything is wonderful (I don't now what keethar and peepal stand for here, so I've given the general meaning)
Aaja katena ratiyaan

Dum dara dum dara mast mast dara - 2
Dum dara dm dum oh hum dum
Bin tere kya jeena

Maybe it's symbolic, apparently Guru has to leave for "duty", which is considered the other woman keeping him away from his wife.

I noticed Mayya isn't translated...after just seeing a video on the song i found out that 'Mayya Mayya' means water according to Rahman.  In fact he had never even heard the word till someone was handing out water screaming 'mayya mayya' - so hope that might help with the translation....

It seems to be fairly standard Hindi to me, Jennifer.

Jennifer, they're singing in an Arab fashion, but the language itself is standard Hindi.

I should mention I haven't heard the song and I was judging by the lyrics here.

Yeah, the song definately has a middle-eastern flavor to it... she sounds like she has some sort of an accent- and some parts sound arabic-

but James, how could you tell without having heard the song? thats amazing...

Not really!  Smiley  Just like you can tell if someone is speaking in a dialect in English by word choice and sentence structure, you can do the same with Hindi (it's actually easier to do in Hindi since different dialects pronounce words differently and that gets reflected in the spelling when it often doesn't in English).  And with Hindi, the different dialects often add endings to words that don't exist in the standard spelling, that indicate it's a dialect.  None of that was present here, so it seemed safe to say that the sections that are Hindi according to what I read here are standard Hindi.

There is some Arabic in the song. Sounds like it to me anyway. ARR also said there is some Gujrati. But most of it is in Hindi.

Feel free to correct. I did the best I could. Glad to finally know what it means! Listened to it so many times.

Mayya
Water

Thoo Neel Samundar Hai (X2)
you are the blue sea
Main Reth Ka Saahil Hoon (X2)
i am the sandy shore
Aaghosh Mein Le Le
take me in your arms
Main Der Se Pyaasi Hoon
i've been thirsty for a long time
Ek Sauda Raat Ka, Ek Kaudi Chaand Ki
a business of the night, a piece of the moon
Chaahe Toh Choom Le, Tu Todi Chaand Ki
if you want to, kiss a part of the moon
Ek Sauda Raat Ka, Ek Kaudi Chaand Ki
Chaahe Toh Choom Le, Tu Todi Chaand Ki
Ek Chaand Ki Kashthi Mein
in a ship to the moon
Chal Paar Utarna Hai
we need to get across
Tu Halke Halke Khenaa Daariya Na Chalke
take it easy, that the sea doesn't take us
Mayya Mayya Gulaabi Taaren Chun Le, Saare Chun
water .. water, if you touch a rosy star, choose them all
Mayya Mayya Ki Jism Ke Pardon Mein Dardon Ke Maarey Chun Le
water .. water, and choose the veiled body where the pain has killed
Mayya Mayya Gulaabi Taaren Chun Le, Saare Chun
Mayya Mayya Ki Jism Ke Pardon Mein Dardon Ke Maarey Chun Le
Jab Neel Samundar Jaage
when the sea awakens
Aaghosh Me Lekar Saahil
it embraces the shore
Lehraathaa Hai Aur Masti Mein
it waves, and in lust
Mehtaab Ke Chehra Choomthaa Hai
it kisses the face
Mayya ...
Main Seene Mein
my chest
Teri saasen Bhar Leti Hoon
i fill it with your breaths
Karwat Karwat Main Tujh Se Lipatkar
when i turn at night, i cling to you
Raat Basarkar Lethi Hoon
i pass the night
Mayya Mayya Mayya Mayya
water ...
Seene Se Mere Utthaa Hai Dhuwaan
smoke rises from my chest
Mayya Mayya Mayya Mayy
Deewar Pe Kya Likhthaa Hai Dhuwaan
what does the smoke write on the wall
Dheemaa Dheemaa Dheemaa Dhuwaan
slowly, slowly, slowly the smoke
Har Baar Yeh Kya Kehtaa Hai Dhuwaan
what does the smoke say all the time
Mayya Mayya Ale Le Le (X2)
Ek Sauda Raat Ka, Ek Kaudi Chaand Ki
a business of the night, a piece of the moon
Chaahe Toh Choom Le, Tu Todi Chaand Ki
if you want to, kiss a part of the moon
Ek Megh Ki Kashthi Mein
in a ship of clouds
Chal Paar Utarna Hai, Tu Halke Halke Khenaa
we need to sail across, take it easy
Dariyaa Na Chalke
that the sea doesn't take us
Mayya Mayya .... Ale Le Aaya Le Le Aaya Le
Mayya Mayya ....Ye Liliyaya Liliyaya Ye El Li He
Mayya Mayya Ale Le Le (X2)
Walidaaaaa....
Ishta
Are Walida Walida
Maara Walida Walida Maara
Charpar Barse Charpar Barse Mehulo, Yevelo Yevelo
Charpar Barse Charpar Barse Mehulo, Hey Ji Re E Hey Ji Re E Ji Re E
Charpar Barse Charpar Barse Mehulo
Walidaa....Mayya Mayya, Ale Le He Habibi

The last parts are in Gujrati and Arabic. I can't do it. Hope this is ok.

Can someone please write the lyrics (hindi and english) for "Shauq hai" in GURU?  There were two parts of it, one where Vidya Balan was dying and the other at her funeral.  It's so beautifully sung, and I would really appreciate knowing what was being said.

Thanks

I tried translating “Mayya Mayya” but the song literally fought back! I finally managed.
By the way, “Mayya Mayya” is somewhat similar to “Rasiya” from “The Rising” (“Mangal Pandey”). If you listen to both songs back to back, it becomes quite obvious. A.R. Rahman becoming repetitive?

Mayya Mayya

tuu niil sama.ndar hai tuu niil sama.ndar hai
 (You are the blue Ocean.)
mai.n reth kaa saahil huu.n mai.n reth kaa saahil huu.n
 (I am the sandy shore.)
aaghosh me.n le le
 (Draw me into your arms.)
mai.n der se pyaasii huu.n
(I have been thirsty for a while.)

ek saudaa raat kaa ek kauRii chaa.nd kii
(A deal for a night, a coin of the Moon.)
chaahe toh chuum le tuu toRii chaa.nd kii
(You may kiss if you want, but you have to pay.)
ek saudaa raat kaa ek kauRii chaa.nd kii
(A one night stand, one coin of the Moon.)
chaahe toh chuum le tuu toRii chaa.nd kii
(If you want, steal a kiss; give a piece of the Moon.)

ek chaa.nd kii kashtii me.n chal paar uTarnaa hai
(Come on, we have to get across in the boat of the Moon.)
tuu halke halke khenaa dariyaa naa chhalke
(Row slowly, so the river doesn’t make a splash.)

mayyaa mayyaa
 (Visionary water.)
gulaabii taare.n chun le saare chun
(Gather the rosy stars, gather them all.)
mayyaa mayyaa
 (Visionary water.)
ki jism ke pardo.n me.n dardo.n ke maare chun le
(Pick up those whom pain struck under the carnal veil.)

mayyaa mayyaa
 (Visionary water.)
gulaabii taare.n chun le saare chun
(Gather the rosy stars, gather them all.)
mayyaa mayyaa
 (Visionary water.)
ki jism ke pardo.n me.n dardo.n ke maare chun le

jab niil sama.ndar jaage aaghosh me.n lekar saahil
(When the blue Ocean awakens embracing the shore,)
laharaataa hai aur mastii me.n mahataab kaa cheharaa chuumtaa hai
(it stirs up and, aroused, caresses the face of its lover.)

mere siine me.n terii saa.nse.n bhar letii huu.n
(I fill my chest with your breath.)
karwat karwat mai.n tujhse lipaTkar raat basarkar letii huu.n
(All night long, I twist and turn, wrapping myself around you.)

mayyaa mayyaa mayyaa

dhiimaa dhiimaa dhiimaa dhu’aa.n
 (Light, gentle smoke.)
har baar yah kyaa kahtaa hai dhu’aa.n
(Every time, what does this smoke say?)

mayyaa mayyaa
 (Visionary water.)

chaahe toh chuum le tuu toRii chaa.nd kii

With this song, Shreya Ghoshal proves she is a diva.

Barso Re

barso re meghaa meghaa barso re
(Oh, shower down, rain cloud; rain cloud, oh, shower down.)
meghaa meghaa barso re meghaa barso
(Cloud, cloud, give us rain; oh, cloud, do rain.)
miiTHaa hai kosaa hai baarish kaa bosaa hai
 (It’s a sweet misfortune; it’s a kiss of Rain.)
kosaa hai kosaa hai baarisho.n kaa bosaa hai
(A curse, a jinx; a kiss of the rain showers.)
jal jal jal jal jal jal jal thal jal thal
(Water, water… Water and earth, water and earth.)
chal chal chal chal chal chal chal chal
 (Pour down.)
chal chal bahataa chal
 (Keep flowing.)
giilii giilii giilii ha ha ha ha ha
 (It’s wet! Ha ha ha!)
giilii giilii maaTii giilii maaTii ke chal gharo.nge banaaye.nge re
(The ground’s wet; come on, let’s play with it, hey!)
harii bharii aambii aambii kii Daalii
(The branch of the mango tree is green and heavy.)
milke jhule jhulaaye.nge re oh
(Having found swings, hey, we’ll swing, oh.)
dhan baiju gai ne hal jote sab ne
(People tended to the soil in every field and farm.)
bailo.n kii gantii baajii aur taal lage bharne
(The herd’s bells chimed and the ponds became full.)
re tairke chalii mai.n toh paar chalii
(Hey, I went swimming and I got across.)
paar waale paar le kinaar chalii re meghaa
(I crossed and reached the shore, oh, cloud.)
kaalii kaalii raate.n kaalii raato.n me.n yah badarwaa baras jaayegaa
(Dark, dark nights; one black night this rain cloud will burst and shower down.)
galii galii mujhko meghaa DHuu.nDHegaa
(The cloud will search for me from lane to lane,)
aur garajke palaT jaayegaa
(and with a great rumble will turn round.)
ghar aa.ngan aa.ngana aur paanii kaa jharnaa
(The house, the courtyard and the lake.)
bhuul naa jaanaa mujhe puuchhe.nge varna
(Don’t forget me, otherwise you’ll be questioned.)
re bahke chalii mai.n toh bahke chalii
(Hey, I walked, swaying; swaying, I walked.)
re kahke chalii mai.n toh kahke chalii
(Hey, I walked, talking; talking, I walked.)

doesn't this mean?

ghar mein ek bibiyonki jodi hoti to
so what happens if you get a pair (twins) from one wife?
so what happens if you have a pair of wives at home?
Hi my name is Priya and I would like to try answerin' the important questions.
When Abhishek in the movie Guru got to know that he becomes Daddy of Twins, he danced and sang this song.
And this sentences "ghar mein ek bibiyonki jodi hoti to" means something like "if you hav two women at home"
