This wonderful gem of a movie was the first in the Khiladi series of Akshay Kumar. I remember being MAD about 'Chura ke dil mera goriya chali' when it first came out Grin

Heh. That was among the first five songs I added to my Youtube BW songs list. I still like listening to it once a while. Smiley

Since I've never seen MKTA, my first exposure to this song was in the movie Aladin! There was the coolest acapella group in Ritesh's college in Aladin who sang Churake Dil Mera in the movie. I went to the original but even though I like Alka Yagnik I still preferred the acapella version  Grin .. those guys should release an album of acapella Bolllywood remixes.

Wow! I did not expect so much excitement about 'Chura Ke Dil Mera Goriya Chali'! However I have to correct myself when I said in my earlier post that MKTA was the first in the Khiladi series. Upon further investigation into my rolodex brain, 'Khiladi' was the first movie in the 'Khiladi' series. It's actually a not so bad movie with Akki and Ayesha Jhulka. Lots of flounciness and big hair and 'mutton chop' kameezes. 'Wada raha sanam' being a good example

Thanks for the Barah Aana explanation (wonder why is the title spelled aana, then? http://www.barahaana.com/)
I guess I'll go on asking in the movie thread, cuz i'm also interested in why the movie is titled this way ( I guess Naseeruddin's character says something with that phrase in the last minutes of the film).

I had a similar issue with Vaaranam Aayiram:  it was fairly easy to establish that it means "a thousand elephants" and also that it's the first line of a devotional hymn or something, but as to why - the question's still open  Grin

Inspired by the shared Alternative Movie Title spreadsheet (for different titles for movie re-makes and dubs):

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AmC0eRq7HdprdGRuNms1NG44VmtkR25iSVN5UmpSb2c&hl=en&authkey=CKvGg5QI

I made one for Movie Title Translations:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AmC0eRq7HdprdGZVdHRrVTIzUEdZejVTV1EzdGh3bVE&hl=en&authkey=CIKG67cB

I already added as editors the people who wanted to be added to the other spreadsheets.  Anyone who wants to be added, just pm me a gmail address.  (ETA:  actually, I don't know if it does have to be a gmail address.  an aol address is working.)

It has the titles listed in this thread, but I think there might be another thread of movie title translations?  I couldn't find it.

(Actually, maybe these two spreadsheets should be linked or merged in some way, now that I think about it?   Huh The thing is, the titles in different languages may actually have different meanings...)

ETA:
I learned from jjake and Ms. Chandni that we could actually add the English translations of each title as a comment.  If you hover over "Lage Raho Munnabhai," you can see an example.

Right click on the box with the title, then

Click on "insert comment" and type in the English translation.

If you aren't an editor yet and would like to be, please just pm me an email address, and I will very happily add you!   Smiley

Here's the link again for the Alternate Movie Titles spreadsheet:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AmC0eRq7HdprdGRuNms1NG44VmtkR25iSVN5UmpSb2c&hl=en&authkey=CKvGg5QI

I think this thread is just Hindi Movie Title Translations.  The "Translate these SI Movie Titles" thread is here.

^^^ Excuse my ignorance, but why did they name the film this again? I understand it was quite controversial (the title, not the film, which I liked Smiley)

I don't remember the title being controversial, so I'm not sure about that.

As to why they gave the movie this title, I would speculate that it's several reasons, but primarily because it connects to the haunting storyline, and the history of the mansion being associated with royals.

I've been wondering this forever...What in the world does 'One 2 Ka 4' mean? Angry

I think there was a post on here somewhere that explains that.  I hope I can recreate it here.

In school, we learn the addition tables.  In Hindi, "ek do ka teen", meaning "one plus two is three".

In this movie title, "one 2 ka four" means "one plus two is four".  It is an idomatic way of saying that something doesn't add up.  Which is a good title for a movie where things are not always what they seem like on the surface.

HTH

ETA:  Here's the post I was thinking of.

In Hindi usage, when people are sayng something like 1 + 2 = 3, they instead say 1 2 ka 3.

So when they give an equation that's obviously not true, like 1 2 ka 4, that's an expression that indicates something that's not only untrue, but a conspiracy. It refers to the conspiracy going on in the movie. I've heard it used in other films too, but can't remember right now which ones.

What is the meaning of the title Tees Maar Khan?

I know what the words mean individually but it doesn't make sense when used in this order.  Is this an idiom or metaphor?

I seem to vaguely recall hearing that the title song to Bhool Bhulaiyaa was controversial for using religious elements in a profane way.
