Kaal
- time, season, period, era, epoch. It also stands for fate, calamity, famine, death, an epithet of Yama (the God of death).
Fanaa
- Ruin, destruction, annihilation, not necessarily in love. (i don't know why they put the H at the end of the word. It shouldn't be there. It's written as
फ़ना
Kasak
- pain, ache (usually associated with love)
Mast/Masti
- fun, also drunk and intoxicated.
Pardes
- foreign land as opposed to Swades which means motherland.
Andaz
- manner, method, style.
Andaaza
- rough estimate

palacerani - fanaah is written with a H on the end because that's how it's spelled in Urdu/Persian.

Thanx Sania. I wonder why they spell it without the H in Devanagari. I also went to an urdu dictionary site and they write it as Fanaa in English. If it's spelled with an H in urdu why don't they write it in English too with an H? Very strange.

Well a lot of words have the "h" at the end that aren't transliterated as such, no? Some examples I can think of: ye, chehra, khana, all end in the letter ہ

I dunno about Urdu but not in Hindi. In Hindi they are written as
चहरा, खाना

Are there people who actually pronounce these "h"? I mean at the end of words that are in your list.

But Englisdh transliteraion of BW film titles seems entirely whimsical and inconsistent, na? As a learner, I always wait for the hindi title frame to come up to make sure of what I should be calling the movie.

Well shukiriyah is spelled with an h at the end in uruduu but aacording to Platts Dictionary fanaa is NOT spelled with an h, but with an alif at the end. فنا

Patthar means stone and paayal means anklet.

Teri Yaadein Aati Hain - your memories haunt me
Are Ho Gaye Hum Aap Ke - oh I have become your's
Dil Le Gayee (punjabi) - [s/he] has taken [my] heart
Dumma Dum Mast KaLandar - happy go lucky

You are right. Kal is yesterday & tomorrow (depending on the context), Kaal is time or death.

yeah it effectively means "Keep at it Munna Bhai" or "Don't give up Munna Bhai". in the film it was translated as "Never Say Die Munna Bhai".

Thanks. Would it be too much to ask if you told me the literal translation? Raho must be the the same form as, say, bolo, kaho...right? and Lage? Despite one year of Hindi night classes I have to admit I don't get it
