To take the most obvious "controversy", how were the faked tapes of last summer his fault?

And we've never  heard any more about the "investigation" into who manufactured those fake tapes.  Similarly, all these media articles also regularly recycle statements that he is "involved" with the underworld, without even an "allegedly".

I was referring to his accident where he drove over a victim, his abuse of Ash, his beating up a producer on the sets of CC. These are controversies too and no one manufactured them.

OK, PR, you're forcing me into it.  Wink

Accident --   he says he wasn't driving.  The matter is under trial. This is what I  mean about the missing "allegedly".  And was all the brouhaha immediately after it, where he was charged with culpable homicide and jailed, not manufactured?  Has this been done with any other driver who drove over people and killed  them, before or since?  The High Court eventually threw out that homicide charge for lack of evidence.

Abuse of Aish -- you really should look up the old thread Meredith started, something about Salman's popularity in the face of controversies, where I and some others who have experience working with abused women stated the reasons why we thought Aish's claims didn't hold up.  Also, even if you accept them, it's his word against hers, with no proof offered.  Undecidable case.

Incident on CC sets -- Since SRK was the producer, and he never made any statement about being beaten up, either then or now, but on the contrary, maintained all the while that he and Salman were good friends and would resume their friendship again, and has resumed that friendship again (have you forgotten that you sent me the translation of the lyrics to the KHNH song he sang to Salman in their Oakland show?  Wink ), I would call this inconclusive, too.

i do think that he has some anger managment issues..but he seems to  react with his heart not his mind, thats the crux of the problem, its like he hasnt learnt the art or guile of editing himself.., which lands him into trouble.. the  oftrepeated cliche of "wearing his heart on his sleeve" comes to mind, which gets him into trouble but also has made him some extraorndinarily loyal friends and fans

This man thinks with his heart, that's why we all love him’

Industry friends make a trip to Jodhpur to visit Salman in the slammer

Subhash K Jha

As Salman Khan remains in jail in Jodhpur for the second day, his family and friends in the film industry get progressively anxious. But not for professional reasons. As a question mark hovers over Salman's pending assignments, the general reaction is epitomised by David Dhawan. His overseas schedule for the Salman-Govinda-Katrina-Lara- starrer, Partner, has been postponed.

“We were supposed to leave for a schedule in Canada yesterday. All of us were sure that Salman would get bail yesterday. But now the bail hearing has been postponed to today. So we've cancelled the trip to Canada. At this point I'm not even thinking about Partner. My only thought is, my dear friend should return home safe and sound. Filmein to banti rahengi (Films will continue to be made). A friend like Salman is hard to come by,” he says.

David laughs away the losses the cancelled schedule will entail. “Do you really think I give a damn about the film right now? I've made 38 films, eight of them with Salman. We are not just friends. We're brothers. All I want is Salman be released. Who cares about the work? Who cares if my film gets postponed, cancelled or canned?”

The director takes a deep breath. “We often wonder why this happens to Salman. He's such a loving, giving person. He has helped so many people, including Sanjay Bhansali, who was down-and-out after Khamoshi. Without a thought, Salman agreed to do another picture for Sanjay. This man thinks with his heart. That's why we all love him. You cannot imagine a more devoted brother than Sohail. And his sister Alvira? She's Salman's pillar of strength, almost like a mother-figure.”

Salmanbhai will survive

Sohail Khan talks about brother Salman's trauma, from Jodhpur

Subhash K Jha

Sohail Khan hasn't slept much in the last two days. His star-brother Salman Khan is in trouble… yet again. And it looks like serious trouble. Sohail has been in consultation with lawyers all night. “They're competent and they know what they're doing. But they're helpless. With due respects to the law, our lawyers think the five-year sentence is unjust,” he says.

“If it was a three-year sentence, the judge himself could've granted bail. He pronounced his sentence at 1.30 p.m. when the sessions court had already closed. That does seem strange…  And now the hearing for the bail has been postponed for tomorrow. I can't understand it.”

Sohail met Salman on Tuesday. “He's okay, he's in good health… And yes, he's eating,” he says. “It's my mom we're worried about. After she heard the sentence she couldn't take it. She was expecting the bail today (Wednesday). Now we don't know how to break the news of the postponement to her. She can't bear the thought of Salmanbhai being in jail.”

The entire Khan clan is under tremendous pressure. “They want to make an example of my brother only because of who he is,” says Sohail.  “Why such harsh punishment for him? Do they want to set a precedent? Till date no one has been granted such harsh punishment for similar cases … My brother even went to jail for an accident case. An accident cannot be considered a crime.”

“I know he doesn't speak to the press,” he adds. “But that's the way he is. He doesn't open up to anybody. Does that give anyone the right to hunt him down for offences that are not granted such severe sentences in other cases? Right now it has become a power game. ‘Let's hunt this boy down. Let's bring him down to his knees’.”

“Salman should be treated like an ordinary citizen, right now he is being treated much worse. If he's being made into an example is everyone in a black buck case going to go to prison and is everyone involved in a road accident going to go to jail? If you've sent Salmanbhai to jail, send everybody else involved in similar cases, too.”

Sohail will remain in Jodhpur until further development. “I'm here with my sister,” he says. “Today I was disappointed when the bail please was rejected. But that's okay. Tomorrow is another day. Salmanbhai will survive.”

• They want to make an example of my brother only because of who he is. Why such harsh punishment for him?

These may not be proved yet but I was referring to your post where you said or at least made it sound that other people were orchestrating it. I don't believe that.

Some facts you can't ignore when witnesses have seen Salman trying to choke Ash in his anger, her father stating he stalked her and was outside their house at 2am or something trying to beat down the door etc.

There was another producer too for CC...Aziz Mirza. And did you forget that since that time SRK has not spoken a word to him till recently?

I don't want to go into further details, this is not the thread. Suffice to say I don't buy the conspiracy theory. Like I said I don't know yet about this case, But other controversies have been his responsibility.

Now I'm tired.   Smiley  So I'm not going to argue this any further.

An explanation emerges.

Conviction has done what crores couldn’t’

Wildlife dept says that Salman’s case has raised more awareness about poaching than campaigns

Narendra Kaushik

New Delhi: Actor Salman Khan’s conviction in the seven-year-old chinkara poaching case has done what publicity worth crores could not have achieved, according to officials of the Wildlife Department of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

“Earlier, people looked at us as toothless tigers. Now, this perception will change,” said a highly-placed official. He added that the order would dissuade feudalistic and occasional hunters from killing wild animals allowing the department to concentrate on professional poachers like Sansar Chand.

The verdict against Salman Khan has also encouraged wildlife activists, who are trying to secure the conviction of Mansur Ali Khan alias Tiger Pataudi in a black buck poaching case. The former captain of the Indian cricket team is being tried along with seven others for hunting an endangered black buck in Jhajjar district of Haryana in June 2005.

“We’re greatly enthused by the order against Salman. This will increase the fear of law among chhote mote (small-time) hunters. We look forward to a favourable judgement in the Pataudi case now,” says Naresh Kumar Kadyan, Founder of the Haryana Unit of the People for Animals, who is actively involved in the case against Pataudi. Kadyan claimed that evidence against Pataudi was very strong. Pataudi is currently out on bail.

Earlier, a lab in Hyderabad confirmed that the bullet recovered from the carcass of the black buck was fired from a .12 bore weapon. Pataudi and his associate Shashi Singh were in possession of .12 bore weapons at the time of the incident. Pataudi's weapon was registered in the name of his daughter actress Soha Ali Khan.

Not surprisingly, Pataudi’s lawyers have termed the verdict ‘harsh’. They are hoping that it is not repeated in the case of their client. “In such cases, the accused is usually given three years’ imprisonment. Five years is too much and looks like harassment. It is wrong to single out VIPs,” said Shyam Sunder Goyal, a lawyer who represents Pataudi in the lower court.

After three nights in jail, Salman Khan gets bail

HindustanTimes.com

New Delhi, April 13, 2006

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was on Thursday granted bail in the 1998 black buck hunting case. He will be set free by evening.

The actor spent three nights in Jodhpur jail.

Salman was on Monday sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment and sent to central jail in Jodhpur by a local court in connection with the 1998 black buck poaching case.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Brijendra Kumar Jain had also imposed Rs 25,000 fine on the star, who was taken into custody and sent to the jail.

The court had ordered one year rigorous imprisonment for co-accused Govardhan Singh and imposed Rs 5000 fine.

Four other persons were acquitted in the case when a chinkara was killed by Salman at Ghora farmhouse in Jodhpur.

Salman, facing four poaching cases, was earlier sentenced to one year imprisonment by the same court on February 17 for killing the endangered animal but the sentence was suspended for a month to enable him to appeal.

Seven other accused, including comedian Satish Shah, were acquitted in this case.

In other cases, actors Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, Tabbu and Sonali Bendre are co-accused.

LOL!  Sorry, but the Indian court system works a tad more slowly than that.  The next court date for both appeals (that is, for both the cases in which he has been convicted already) is June 19.

Earlier in the day there was talk that the Rock Star Concert dates would be rescheduled, with the new dates to be determined after Salman gets out on bail.  Don't forget John is also in hospital, with the expectation of being arrested when he is discharged.  So there are a few complications to work out.

Not  sure if this was posted anywhere, but some people seem to be talking up the prospect of Salman 's keeping the third week date.

http://123india.santabanta.com/cinema.asp?pid=10232

Salman will be out of Jail soon: Ali Morani
Salman Khan is supposed to leave for a World Concert entitled Rock Stars later this month for the Moranis. How does the current turn of events affect the plans? Ali Morani tells Subhash K Jha...

"The concert Rock Stars is very much on. Yes, we were worried. Because it's seventeen cities all over the world. We spoke to Salman's lawyer Mr Mehta. We wanted to know whether we should postpone cancel or just wait. He assured us that there's nothing to wrrory about.

They're moving the court to get a stay order. Then Salman can travel for the concerts. Even last time when Salman got one year's sentence, he could travel to Mauritius after the stay order. We're confident that he'll accompany us."

Something or the other seems to be going wrong with the Moranis' concerts…"Well…yeah. John who will accompany Salman had a minor foot injury. But no fractures—thank God! Just before our current concerts Heat Saif Ali Khan had an appendix operations. Because of his commitment to the show and to his fans Saif is right now on the show.

He isn't dancing but talking to his fans out there. The stars love the fans, and vice versa. Whatever happens our stars remain committed and professional about these concerts.

I'm confident that Salman will accompany Shahid Kapoor, Zayed Khan, Mallika Sherwat, Esha Deol, John Abraham and Kareena Kapoor when they leave later this month….Most of them—Mallika, Esha, Zayed and Shahid—are performing abroad for the first time. "

The first Salman & Co show is on 21 April in Calgary ….From there the Rock Stars move to the US and England concluding with a show in Amsterdam. "We return on the 29 May. All three of us brothers Mohammed, Karim and I will be going with them."

Ali points at the Temptations concert two years ago with Shah Rukh Khan as a turning point for world concerts.

"It performed in thirty-five cities. We gave the audience more than expected. This time for the Heat concerts we've given the audience more of everything…See, the whole of last year there were no star shows overseas. The NRI audiences are starved for star entertainment."

Incidentally the stars are all insured for their overseas performances. But what happens when they injury themselves at home just before the world tour?

Admits Ali, "That happens sometimes. Two years ago before the Breathless concerts with Hrithik Roshan, Fardeen Khan twisted his ankle and couldn't perform. But he came along, spoke to the audience and generally made his presence felt…

We work very hard to make these events memorable for audiences abroad. Our stars too go out of their way. We're sure Salman will be with us. He's got to be!"

Salman Khan released from jail

CNN-IBN

Updated Thursday , April 13, 2006 at 17:49 Email  Print
Jodhpur (Rajasthan): Bollywood actor Salman Khan was released from jail on Thursday after a court granted him bail in Jodhpur.

On Monday, a local court found Salman guilty of killing two Chinkaras (Indian gazelle) in the Mathania region of Rajasthan and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment.

Salman was also fined Rs 25,000 and was sent to the Central Jail. He was today granted bail by District and Sessions Judge, G S Surana.

The actor has deposited two bail bonds of Rs 1 lakh each and a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh.

The next two hearings will be on April 19 and April 22.

Says Salman's brother and actor-director, Sohail Khan, "He has been released and can fly back to Mumbai now."

On Thursday morning, the situation outside the Jodhpur court was tense when police had to lathicharge fans who had gathered outside to catch a glimpse of Bollywood's problem child.

Actress Katrina Kaif, actor Govinda, directors David Dhawan and Sajid Nadiadwala and producers Rumi Jaferi and Afzal Khan were also present along with Salman's family members.

The Bollywood fraternity at the moment is a relieved lot and are hoping that with bail being granted, Salman will be able to complete some of the films that had been stalled with his arrest.

Currently, over Rs 75 crore is at stake in Bollywood if Salman Khan goes to jail

Salman sentence is harshest ever

odhpur: Since 1992, there have been 72 cases of animal hunting registered in Jodhpur courts. Of them, only three have resulted in convictions, of which Salman accounts for two.

In fact, the five-year rigorous imprisonment handed out to him is the highest punishment the Jodhpur court has awarded anyone for hunting.

Of the 72 cases, 52 are related to chinkaras and other deer. On February 17 this year, Salman was sentenced to a year’s term for killing two chinkaras in 1998.

On April 10, Salman was again sentenced to five years RI for killing another chinkara. The only other conviction since 1992 in Jodhpur is that of Peparam Bheel.

Said Sagaram Bishnoi, a forest officer, “Among the three convictions in Jodhpur, only Salman has been severely punished. People have been taken to jail after the hunt, but not after the judgment.”

Murder-cum-hunt

In 1996, Bheel from Oshiya village in Jodhpur, had not only killed a chinkara, but also shot the person who tried to save the animal.

He was convicted two years later and sentenced to three years imprisonment under the Wildlife Act for killing the chinkara, and life imprisonment for murder.

Another accused Bastiram Khatik was sentenced to a year, as he was caught with the skin of deer and chinkaras.

Said BJ Mathur, vet from Jodhpur Veterinary Hospital, “Hunting has dipped since the Salman case. Earlier, this was a craze for the upper class people, but the law has now grown stronger. But it’s true that Salman has been targeted as he is a star.”

Target celebs

Shyamlal Bohra from the forest department, who looks after the court cases, said, “There have been cases where the accused has been jailed for two or three days, but never has someone been given a five-year term. In most cases, the witnesses turn hostile or the accused is released after paying a penalty.”

Case by case

30 cases – Trial is on
10 cases - Investigation is complete, but trial yet to begin
15 cases – Investigations are on
4 cases – Trial complete, but arguments remain
3 cases – Convictions
10 cases – Acquittals

Who? Salman Khan
What? Awarded highest punishment among all poaching in Jodhpur
How? Out of 72 poachers, only 1 other person — a murderer — has been convicted

OK, now after reading how no one else has been sentenced to anywhere near as much (and how few people have been sentenced), and that Salman has been sentenced to more than the guy who also killed a person...that is really bizarre. And unfair. I guess being a celebrity is a really double-edged sword.

Can anyone get the Wall Street Journal online and copy an article here?  That would be great.

There was an article on the front page of the WSJ on April 11 about this: Indian blackbuck and other "exotic" animals being illegally imported into  Spain and hunted.

Spanish law enforcers have found the carcasses of tigers as well as Indian blackbuck antelope in these places.  Rich people pay as much as $30,000 for a day of this hunting.

Interestingly I don't htink the article mentions that blackbuck is an endangered species, the focus is on the illegal importation and the difficulty of stemming it with a small department assigned to it.

Coming from Wigan I often have trouble understanding the Queen's English, so I really don't stand a chance with coloquial Californian. Is 'chicken little' a brand like Colonel Saunders or is this a contemporary of Foghorn Leghorn who never made it on British telly?

Fans cheer as Salman is released
   By: PTI
   April 13, 2006

Jodhpur: Much to his relief, Bollywood actor Salman Khan today walked out on bail from the Central Jail here after spending three days behind bars following his conviction in a poaching case.

Clad in jeans and a white sleeveless vest, the 40-year-old star was received by his brother Sohail, sister Alivera and his model-turned-actor friend Katrina Kaif besides Bollywood personalities Sajid Nadiadwala, Govinda and David Dhawan as he came out of the prison.

A large number of his fans and supporters outside the jail cheered him as he drove past the gate in a maroon Qualis.

Although the actor did not speak to the large posse of media, Alivera thanked Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti on whose Dargah in Ajmer she and Sohail yesterday offered prayers for Salman's early release. "I am so happy," she said, a sentiment that Katrina echoed.

Sohail said, "This was a good news not only for Salman bhai but for the entire family. Our mother has also been discharged from hospital in Mumbai." Their mother Salma had taken ill after hearing about Salman's conviction on Monday and was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital.

While granting Salman bail, District and Sessions Judge G S Surana directed him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each.

Salman was directed not to leave the country without prior permission of the court.

The judge also admitted Salman's appeal against his five years jail sentence for killing a Chinkara in September 1998 and fixed June 19 for final hearing on suspension of the sentence.

Salman's fans who had gathered outside the court since morning were jubilant when they heard about his bail being granted. Police had a tough time in controlling the crowd and had to resort to a mild lathicharge.

Salman was not present in the court when the judge granted him bail after lengthy arguments from both prosecution and defence lawyers.

He had appeared before the court earlier in the day in connection with his appeal against another poaching case in which he has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment.

So he managed to escape Foxey Woxey who, no doubt, ended up on the wrong end of Mack Tussell the Jack Russell. I bet since that story was written Chicken Little ended up as the 6 McNuggets I had for me supper last night.

for a carnivore eater of the nuggets of small birds slaughtered by scotsmenthat came from california you show up  plenty good outrage.

what were you complaining about? Salman khan killing vension?
