OK.  I was in the Indian store looking to buy some Bollywood music CDs...preferably compilation CDs (songs from different movies on one CD), and also looking for music from modern films and classical films (60's,70's, onward).  I was a little overwhelmed.  Does anyone have suggestions?

I always recommend two compilations to folks who want a broad overview of filmi music:

Beginner's Guide to Bollywood, a 3-CD set with one CD each of classic, funky-70s, and modern;

Rough Guide to Bollywood, classics to modern overviewed on a single CD.  This was the collection that started it all for me and dozens of albums and sountracks later I still love it.

I've posted Amazon links but these collections should be widely available.  Enjoy!

Raspberry, here are some recent soundtracks in which I think nearly every song could be included in a best-of:

Veer-Zaara
Dil Chahta Hai
Tere Naam
Swades
Saathiya
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanaam
Main Hoon Na
Dus
Bluffmaster
Dil to Pagal Hai
Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham
Devdas
Lucky
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke
Lakshya
Kal Ho Naa Ho
Paheli
Lagaan
Kuch Naa Kaho

and some West-East mixes:
Monsoon Wedding
Bend It Like Beckham

Oh, well I'm glad you already have them, but sorry I couldn't be more helpful.   Smiley   I have to admit that once I had those, I decided to just go for soundtracks, although occasionally I bought compilations of certain singers, which are also not too hard to find.  I think I bought a couple of Asha and Rafi compilations early on, for example.

I more end up purchasing DVD song compilations as oppose to CD ones (prices are pretty much the same as for the latter, and with the former you get the videos/song picturizations too.)
