Miscellaneous Marathi queries
«
on:
May 18, 2006, 09:30:26 PM »
Ok, I found a site which has basic phrases in Marathi, and I wanted to post the site for ya'all to use.
http://www.marathimitra.com/
I dont remember which topic it was in but it was either Chand or Daniel who was discussing the "z" sound which was transliterated as a "jha" in Marathi. The "ज" is apparently the "zhe" sound like maybe in Farsi, and the "झ" is pronounced like a "z." Perhaps a Marathi speaker can confirm this...I think Palacerani described it as an inbetween sound.

Yep the Jh sounds like tza. For instance Jhaala is said as Tzaala. Another letter is ch. Chaangla is said as Tsaangla. Sounds like that.

Gujaratis too do that sometimes with છ (छ) but it's more a matter of accent than official pronunciation

It's kinda the accent I'm talking about Ber, not an official pronunciation. But every native speaker says it that way.
PG the J is said properly, it's the Jh that's given an accent.

Can somebody put up a marathi verb conjugation for the present tense? I don't have a marahti grammar book but I would to see the similarities to hindi.
For example they say aahe instead of hai in marathi.

main karta hoon = mee karto ( i do )
main karti hoon = mee karte
tum karte ho = tu kartos
tum karti ho = tu kartes
vah karta hai = to karto
vah karti hai = ti karte
(neuter gender) = te karte
hum karte hain = aamhi karto
aap karte hain = tumhi karta
ve karte hain = te kartaat
ve karti hain = tya kartaat
conjugation for indian language . never done this before

as i'm on a roll , here's conjugation of asne ( to be ) that you ask :
i am = mee aahe
you are = tu aahes
he/she/it is = to/ti/te aahe
we are = aamhi aahot
you are = tumhi aahaat
they are = te/tya/ti aahet
another form is used for certain situations :
mee asto
tu astos/astes
to asto
ti aste
te aste
aamhi asto
tumhi asta
te/tya/ti astaat
in marathi there are two 'we' . aamhi and aapan . aapaN includes person being spoken to , aamhee excludes . conjugation for both 'we' is same .

Mala=mera
azun--is that like saying puN...like mujhe bhi?
lets see....mujhe bhi maratii sikhaani padegi. mujhe mumai mein padhai jaana-something?
btw...the paigey, if I assume is the same as PaDnaa in Hindi, sounds sim?ilar to paega in Punjabi....
"menu vi marathi sikhaani paegi. main mumbai 'ch padhai...something..?

Is the first one the same as "huun hai ho hain" and the second like "woh hota hai, yeh hoti hai, ve hote hain...etc?" Can you elaborate on this? Do you know of any good marathi teaching material?

you got it pgator
.
about mustaqbil's post ,
malaa azoon marathi shikaila pahije = mujhe aur zyaada marathi seekhni chahiye .
btw , ber wanted all conjugs in devnagri and was kind enough to translate all perfectly . he seems shy to post them so i do it here :
main karta hoon = mee karto मी करतो
main karti hoon = mee karte मी करते
tum karte ho = tu kartos तू करतोस
tum karti ho = tu kartes तू करतेस
vah karta hai = to karto तो करतो
vah karti hai = ti karte ती करते
(neuter gender) = te karte ते करते
hum karte hain = aamhi karto आम्ही करतो
aap karte hain = tumhi karta तुम्ही करता
ve karte hain = te kartaat ते करतात
ve karti hain = tya kartaat त्या करतात
(neuter) ती करतात
i am = mee aahe मी आहे
you are = tu aahes तू आहेस
he/she/it is = to/ti/te aahe तो/ती/ते आहे
we are = aamhi aahot आम्ही/आपण आहोत
you are = tumhi aahaat तुम्ही आहात
they are = te/tya/ti aahet ते/त्या/ती आहेत
mee asto मी असतो
tu astos/astes तू असतोस/असतेस
to asto तो असतो
ti aste ती असते
te aste ते असते
aamhi asto आम्ही असतो
tumhi asta तुम्ही असता
te/tya/ti astaat ते/त्या/ती असतात
thanks a lot ber

forgot mustaqbil's second line , mala mumbaila parat zaitsa aahe (told fast becomes zaitsay) = mujhe mumbai vaapis jaaneka hai .
basically endings for ALL verbs present tense are as below
मी -तो, ते
तू -तोस, तेस
तो/ती/ते -तो,ते,ते
आम्ही/आपण -तो
तुम्ही -ता
ते,त्या,ती -तात
to make continuous tense like 'i am running' add the 'aahe' endings
मी पळतो आहे = मैं भाग रहा हूँ
to negate , ending is -त for all mee, tu, ..
तो पळत नाही = वह भागता नहीं है he does not run .
hope this makes it clear
re. marathi learning material question , i know primary school textbooks only , sorry
.
thanks VERY much to ber for showing how to show devnagri on this forum . it's COOL
!

jaanaa
jaannaa
khaanaa
khelna
padhnaa
sona
dekhna
ronaa
dena
lena

general present tense has no auxiliary in marathi . the endings i wrote are it . adding auxiliary makes it continuous tense like in english ' i am running = mee dhaavto aahe ' = main bhaag raha hoon .
pahilyaapasoon = pehle se
now verbs you asked for . many verb stem is same in hindi and marathi because both come from sanskrit , but minor changes are there . others , verbs are comletely different.
siikhna = shikNe
jaanaa = zaaNe
jaannaa = maahit asNe
khaanaa = khaaNe , but if you are having meal , it is jevNe
khelna = kheLNe
padhnaa = if 'to read ' it is vaatsNe . if 'to study ' it is abhyaas karNe
sona = zhopNe
dekhna = baghNe
ronaa = raDNe
dena = deNe
lena = gheNe
in vaatsNe , letter is devanagari cha , but pronunciation is like german 'z' , like ' ts ' . it is like a dental cha .
typing in devnagari is timeconsuming for me . i will do it when i have more time . otherwise , maybe someone else can do it here .

jaanaa = zaaNe
जाना = जाणे
jaannaa = maahit asNe
जानना = माहित असणे

खाना = खाणे, जेवणे
khelna = kheLNe

Thank you Maharani ji!
I can do a retroflex L alright (there isnt much to it I think), but saying KhelNe with the N and L is going to take some getting used to!
