I asked my friend.  He said the first placard says "we will be on a hunger strike from today unless somebody takes us to a movie."  When Mahesh taunts them with the food, they change "from today" to "from tomorrow" on the placard and eat.

Here's a South Indian language/culture question that's puzzling us over on this thread in "Beyond Bollywood."

In Tamil, Telugu, and any other Indian language you may speak, is there any colloquial or symbolic meaning for chickens and roosters?  They seem to show up a lot in South Indian film songs, and to be associated with cocky masculinity (pun intended) for the roosters, and alluring femininity for the chickens.  Is there any linguistic/cultural back-up to this interpretation?

At the 8:00 mark in this video of the movie, you can hear Madhavan say something to Siddharth in what I can only assume to be Tamil. Can anyone tell me what Maddy says to Sidd? It's been driving me nuts for years and now, with the power of Youtube, I can finally link to a clip of it.

To me it sounded like madhavan was speaking hindi, not tamil.

"Chal tu style maarna bandh kar, idhar aa".

Which roughly translates to "Stop trying to act cool/indifferent. Come here and give me a hug."

What senorita said. Maddy and Sid both play pukka North Indians in the film and there's nothing in their characters that imply that they speak Tamil. It's kind of funny you thought that .

Here was my thought process: it's such a quick line that it could've been a throwaway joke because the audience knows that both Madhavan and Siddharth are Tamilians.

It still sounds like Tamil to me.  Which is crazy because I understand a decent amount of Hindi. I don't get it! Maybe it's in a Tamilian cadence? I don't know.

I think you are confused because Madhavan was speaking really fast in a high pitched tone. It took me a couple of tries to figure out what he was saying too.

Could someone translate this opening screen from the Tamil film Karnan?

I found this pretty difficult to translate so it may be all wrong.  Here goes:

சர்ப்பணம்

பெற்றவர் வீதியில் பிள்ளையை விட்டெறிந்தால்
குற்றம் உடையோர் குழந்தைகளா?

Dedication

Should begetter cast child into the street,
are the infants the guilty ones?

I'm having trouble with the next line because I don't recognise the words.  The final line is:

அர்ப்பணம் செய்தோம் அவர்க்கு!

We made the dedication to Him!

Of the untranslated line, I think some words are: 'begotten children', 'self-dignity' and 'he who was abandoned'.  It all seems to be a tribute to Karnan.

Hope this helps, anyway!  Hopefully someone will add to my attempt.

I don't have the cool Tamil characters to denote each and every bit, but in essence its:

Samarppanam - surrender, or as more rightly put, dedication.

1st sentence (that ends with the question mark) - are the infants to blame if the parents cast them away?

2nd sentence (that ends with first exclamation mark) - Such infants have lost (social acceptance? 'suttrazham') and self-esteem.

3rd sentence - We dedicate this to those.


Perhaps a contemporary reference to social ills of infanticide, abandonment by unwed mothers, etc?
